This position is located with the Division of Nursing Services with the Gallup Indian Medical Center in Gallup, NM. The primary purpose of this position is to provide nursing care to potential high risk patients, perform advance and/or specialized nursing task, responding to emergencies for assigned area as float and/or runner to inpatient, outpatient, and/or emergency department.
Duties
Provides basic nursing care to patients with a variety of conditions, illnesses, and/or injuries. Performs a range of personal nursing care to include feeding, bathing, lifting, and turning patients. Transfers/accompanies stable and uncomplicated patients via wheelchair or stretcher to other areas of the hospital for further care, admission, or testing.
Responsible for obtaining and recording patient information as assigned per unit policy (i.e. vital signs, height, weight, l&O, etc.). Shares in the responsibility for reporting observations by observing the patient's condition and reactions, and by keeping the nurse in charge informed of condition changes.
Performs the following procedures, after approved hospital specific formal training and completion of required competencies: Performs glucometer testing and records the results, Inserts a sterile indwelling bladder catheter and maintains a sterile urinary drainage system, Sets up for oxygen administration, and assists the nurse with the oxygen administration device to the patient, Performs 12 lead EKG and sets up for cardiac monitoring, Assists health providers in examination of patients by explaining procedures, positioning, draping and assembling instruments and supplies, etc.
Performs general maintenance duties including cleaning, arranging, and restocking supply· cabinets; cleaning and sorting supplies, instruments, and.equipment.
Shares in the responsibility of maintenance of clinical records and nursing care plans. Adheres to confidentiality policies and the Privacy Act.
Qualifications

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
Individual Occupational Requirements:
Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-4 and above): Qualifying specialized experience includes nonprofessional nursing care work in a hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home, or other medical, nursing, or patient care facility, or in such work as that of a home health aid performing duties such as:
Providing personal nursing care such as providing pre- and post-operative care.
Support duties for diagnostic and technical treatment procedures, such as setting up and operating special medical equipment and apparatus.
Caring for mentally ill patients, including observing, recording, and reporting changes in their behavior, and providing reassurance and encouragement.
Assisting surgeons and registered nurses in operating room activities, including passing instruments, maintaining sterile conditions, and draping and positioning patients.

Education and Training:
For GS-4: Successful completion of a 2-year degree program in an accredited community college, junior college, or college or university in practical nursing or in a field of study appropriate to the specialization of the position, such as education in a program for a psychology, psychiatric, or operating room technician.
In addition to the Occupational Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
GS-04: Applicant must successfully complete 2 years above high school with courses related to the occupation -OR- 6 month of general experience and 6 months of specialized experience (Examples above).
General Experience: (l) Any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position, or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation.
GS-05: Applicant must successfully complete 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with courses related to the occupation -OR- Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: nonprofessional nursing care work in a hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home, or other medical, nursing, or patient care facility, or in such work as that of a home health aid performing duties such as: Providing personal nursing care such as providing pre- and post-operative care, Support duties for diagnostic and technical treatment procedures, such as setting up and operating special medical equipment and apparatus, Caring for mentally ill patients, including observing, recording, and reporting changes in their behavior, and providing reassurance and encouragement, Assisting surgeons and registered nurses in operating room activities, including passing instruments, maintaining sterile conditions, and draping and positioning patients.
Combining Experience and Education: Equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience are also qualifying.
For GS-4 level positions, determine the applicant's total qualifying experience as a percentage of the 1 year of experience required for GS-4; then determine the applicant's education as a percentage of the 2 years of education that meets the requirements for GS-4. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify an applicant for GS-4.
For GS-5 level positions, only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours of a course of study leading to a bachelor's degree is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirements. Two full academic years of study, or 60 semester hours, beyond the second year is equivalent to l year of specialized experience.
Time In Grade
Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).
