The Boiler Plant Operator is a member of the Facilities Management Service Line. The Boiler Plant operations runs on a 24-hour basis year around. The incumbent is responsible for the operation of four 55,000 pounds of steam//hour boilers. he incumbent has total responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of the boilers and auxiliary equipment. This position is located at the VA Black Hills Health Care System.
Duties
Duties include but may not be limited to the following:
Analyze feed water, boiler water, and condensate using standard chemical tests.
Determine the treatment and chemicals to be used to control chemical concentrations remove impurities and entrap gasses.
Check the operation safety equipment such as flame extinction, low water cut-outs, high pressure cut out, purge type combustion safeties and do the monthly, six month and yearly VHA boiler plant safety device testing
Responsible for deciding when to shut down boilers, when to start boilers and when to recall maintenance personnel to handle emergencies that occurs outside normal duty hours.
Replacing packing, gaskets, diaphragms, valves, nipples, and piping. Repairing refractory insulation, CPVC and PVC lines and valves, burners, pumps, regulators, etc.
Checking running equipment and water tanks, lubricating running equipment, logging all temperature, pressure and energy calculations.
Cleaning burners, strainers, fire boxes, mud drums, steam drums, forced shaft fans, water tanks, bearing housings, floors, walls, desks, work benches, toilet, shower, lockers, break room, offices and all work areas around boilers.
Make emergency repairs and minor repairs as recovering pipe, changing or repacking valves, and stopping leaks by tightening connections, etc.
Operator in charge of all Engineering Service after hours, off tour call-backs for the while facility.
Operates emergency generators and related transfer switches to meet plant power requirements when the main power is disrupted or unavailable.
Work Schedule: 8:00am-4:00pm,4:00pm-12:00am,12:00am-8:00am

This occupation is being considered for a Veterans Health Administration enterprise-wide Critical Skills Incentive (CSI). Candidates may be eligible for a lump sum CSI. The amount of lump sum CSI is determined based on appointment date and may be pro-rated as determined by the end date of the CSI. Eligible candidates will be required to sign a service agreement agreeing to an obligated service period and failure to complete the obligated service period may result in a debt for the unearned portion of the CSI.
