This position is located within the Facilities Management Service, Portland, Oregon, section Projects and Operations, Grounds and Transportation.
Duties
The Motor Vehicle Operator will transport patients daily on the main shuttle bus from the Portland Campus to the Vancouver Campus for various medical appointments, transport records and supplies for the Medical Center.
Duties include but may not be limited to:
Operates passenger bus with a Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) rating of 40,000 lbs.
Operates such vehicles as para-transit wheelchair vans, sedans, station wagons, medium duty trucks, and buses.
Operates the patient shuttle between Portland and Vancouver daily.
Ensures patients and cargo loads are secured properly.
Maneuvers large and medium sized buses in confined areas that are congested with other vehicle and pedestrian traffic.
Communicates effectively with patients and a variety of staff.
Interpreting instructions, following directions and reading maps.
Locates obscure addresses and selects the proper route for large vehicles to the address for patient pick up and drop off.
Uses two-way radio to communicate.
Obeys local, state, federal and agency regulations regarding vehicle operation.
Provides preventive maintenance on all Government vehicles.
Schedules repairs with vendors as required.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:00am - 3:30pm.

DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.
Qualifications
PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: The employee is required to lift heavy objects while loading and unloading cargo. The operator assists patients in and out of vehicles, securing mobility aids in preparation for transit. The position requires prolonged periods of driving, sometimes in times of traffic congestion, and the operator must be constantly alert and aware of his/her surroundings. Working conditions for this position are hazardous. The operator must drive on steep terrain during periods of inclement weather. Some of the vehicles operated vibrate and jerk. The operator is subjected to the stress of driving for long periods of time in heavy traffic conditions. The position requires them to be exposed to exhaust fumes and loud noises up to seven hours per day. The operator will also work inside out outside in the elements for periods of time, i.e. rain, snow and ice and extreme heat.
Applicants must be able to perform the duties of a Motor Vehicle Operator WG-7 without more than normal supervision. Examples of experience include driving and maintaining all types of vehicles, such as paratransit wheelchair vans, sedans, station wagons, medium duty trucks, and buses; transporting passengers and cargo; and interpreting and following instructions, maps, etc.
DRIVER'S LICENSE REQUIREMENT (Screen Out): This position requires a current, valid state issued Commercial Driver's License (Class B) passenger and air brake endorsements. Applicants that do not possess this license will not be considered for this position. Do not upload a copy of your license. If an interview is requested, you may be required to provide a copy of your current, valid and unrestricted license.
