This position is a specialty rotating pharmacy technician for the main pharmacy. As the Rotating Specialty Technician Specialist in the area of sterile product preparation and narcotics, the incumbent functions in the Pharmacy Oncology Area and the Narcotic vault, with secondary responsibilities as a staff technician in both the inpatient and outpatient areas of pharmacy service.

Duties

Receive, review, and properly prepare orders for cytotoxic agents, premedication and all other compounded sterile products. Contact and obtain clarification from pharmacists on any questionable dosages or combinations when necessary to ensure quality of care. Bring questionable prescriptions/orders or any situation that present a possible hazard to patient care to the attention of a pharmacist for resolution. Perform accurate product selection, dosage calculations and compounding of agents utilizing reference books, package literature, written procedural guidelines and application of specialized knowledge. Generate of proper product identification labeling and assigning accurate stability and handling information. Contact the assigned pharmacist for final check and then deliver prepared products to the wards, clinics, or other designated areas. Stock and maintain the Pharmacy Service oncology preparation area(s), reviewing anticipated inventory needs and notifying the supply technician in a timely manner of products required. Must also ensure that the Pharmacy Service oncology preparation area(s) and equipment stored there are free from contamination from hazardous drugs, cleaned, maintained, and are in good working order, communicating any needs to the appropriate supervisor or service. Adhere to all policies and procedures for the safe handling, dispensing and disposal of cytotoxic drug agents, as well as dispensing medication and adheres to station policies relating to security, key control, badge access and vault access. Accurately fills outpatient medication in a timely manner using appropriate equipment including computer systems, software applications, counting machines and automated dispensing equipment. Provide comprehensive telephone support for Veteran patients. Answers inquiries related to pharmacy procedures and refers clinical and other judgmental questions to supervisors. Prepare and fill all inpatient and outpatient orders/requests for controlled substances via CII Safe, ensuring accuracy and completion of all documentation in accordance with policies and procedures. Maintain an exact perpetual inventory of all narcotic and controlled substances. Assist in the daily data collection process of investigational drug studies and help in record keeping, return and receipt and security of inventory of investigational drug stock. The process may utilize VISTA and personal computer skills in the generation of reports. Assist assigned medical center personnel with an all-inclusive inventory of narcotic every 72 hours. Adheres to all policies and procedures for handling and dispensing of controlled substances and station policies relating to security, key control, and vault access. Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Citizen of the United States. Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d). Education or Experience: A high school diploma or equivalent; or at least 3 months experience Certification: Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is required at the GS-6 level and above. A copy of your certification must be submitted with your application. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria) Grade Determinations: Pharmacy Technician GS-7 Experience. One year of experience equivalent to at least the next lower level (GS-6) that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. You must fully meet the KSAs at the GS-6 level which includes: ability to solve problems and make recommendations, e.g., troubleshoot operational problems and refer for appropriate action; knowledge of the operation and care of automated equipment; knowledge of, and ability to follow, written instructions for compounding with aseptic technique for hazardous materials such as oncology agents; knowledge, and ability to perform, compounding with aseptic techniques for routine sterile products; knowledge of policies and procedures for inventory management in specialized areas such as emergency carts; and knowledge of the computerized prescription process demonstrated by the ability to input prescriptions and medication orders. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs) and the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*): Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 1. Ability to evaluate, analyze workflow, and coordinate work activities. 2. Ability to independently gather, evaluate, and analyze data to generate reports and/or for other projects/statistical purposes. 3. Knowledge of pharmacy policies and procedures sufficient to train and orient new employees and other staff 4. Comprehensive knowledge of the operation and care of specialized pharmaceutical equipment. 5. Comprehensive knowledge of the procurement and formulary process. 6. Comprehensive knowledge of investigational drug policies and procedures. 7. Comprehensive knowledge of controlled substance policies and procedures, and the ability to identify and investigate discrepancies in these policies and procedures. 8. Comprehensive knowledge of, and ability to, analyze data in VA information systems. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Preferred Experience: IV Oncology Experience References: VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G28 The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-7. Physical Requirements: The work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts, which requires that employee follows safety practices and regulations. The employee works in close proximity to patients, and is therefore, exposed to communicable diseases.
