The Health Technician (CT/IR) performs both clinical and administrative duties in support of the mission for the Department of Veteran Affairs, San Diego Veterans Administration Healthcare System (VASDHCS), Imaging Service.
Duties
The incumbent functions as a Health Technician in Imaging Service supporting patient care in the various imaging modalities as assigned to general diagnostic radiology and Special Procedures. Incumbent assignments support General Diagnostic Section and Special Procedures Sections (CT, MRI, Ultrasound, and Angiography/Interventional) as assigned. The Health Technician is responsible for a wide variety of duties that requires the ability to interact with patients, physicians, nurses, Short Stay Unit (SSU) personnel, Emergency Department, Diagnostic radiologic technologists, Imaging technologists, radiology residents and fellowship physicians, as well as multiple ancillary hospital personnel and services, as well as product and equipment vendors. Incumbent functions effectively as a vital member of the Imaging Service team when cooperative efforts are needed to complete patient procedures and provide a high level of patient satisfaction and safety for patients and team members.
Major duties are below but not limited to:
Responsible for set-up of the procedure room to be used, the sterile surgical exam trays, catheters, and other procedure specific sterile supplies as well as the exam/procedure room that will be used for the procedure. Removes and cleans instruments and rooms after procedures, assures that rooms are cleaned and ready for the next procedure. Prepares and readies used instruments for Sterile Processing Service.
Assists with coordination of work assignments to ensure a smooth workflow. Cleans and prepares the imaging equipment and room for the next exam/procedure.
Prepares the patient for his/her upcoming exam/procedure. Sets up the imaging room to coincide with the examination being performed to include the use of proper sterile procedure when needed.
Checks equipment to be sure they are in working order.
Responsible for the daily testing, documentation, replacement, and maintenance of the Crash Cart equipment and arranges for replacement of outdated items in assigned section.
Provides quality customer service, identifies patient correctly, explains all studies and approximate length of time the study(ies) will take to patient in a clear and professional manner. Provides information and resources to patient and family as needed.
Communicates effectively with patients, their families, and all care providers. Interacts with staff and co-workers in a manner that promotes positive working relationship.
Checks the order for complete information, protocol, and appropriateness criteria for specific modality. Adheres to established section and organizational policy and procedures, QA guidelines, and regulatory requirements.
Ensures that the patient's lab results fall within established modality guidelines for the upcoming procedure/exam. Checks the patient's electronic chart for potential interactions, abnormal lab results or patient conditions that could make it unsafe for the patient to have the requested procedure performed.
Prepares specimens and needed requisitions for submission to the laboratory or pathology section and is part of the team who must assure that the patient identification information is correct and that the lab specimen or blood/body fluid sample is accurately prepared and labeled.
Incumbent must adhere to all safety policies, protocols, and SOPs to include but not limited to radiation safety and MRI safety. Serves as a member of the team that verifies the patient identification, the patient's knowledge of the procedure, and the appropriateness of procedure based on the patient's history.
Perform/obtain temperature, blood pressure, respiratory rate, oxygen saturation measurements, measuring height and weight as needed.
Provides general clerical/administrative support for the clinic.
Scheduling patient appointments, answer telephone calls and register patients as needed.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 10/10/2023.
Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-06 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-05. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade.

You may qualify based on your experience and/or education s described below:
Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-05 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: The Health Technician will support and assist with the vital signs (checking patient in/documenting vital signs/weight in CPRS) and safely transport patients as necessary. The Health Technician maintains rigid safety standards and reports all safety hazards to supervisor in a timely fashion. Monitors safety conditions such as heating, ventilation, and lighting. Provides information to the supervisors and Chief Technologist concerning recognition for outstanding performance and personnel educational needs. Resolves simple informal patient or staff complaints and reports formal complaints to the supervisors, Chief Technologist, Service Chief, or appropriate leadership official. OR,
Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have a half year (i.e., 9 semester hours) of graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required at GS-6 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. Education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. OR
Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify for this position. You must have a combination of specialized experience and education as described above that demonstrates your ability to perform the duties of this position. The education portion must include courses directly related to the work of this position. The computed percentage must be at least 100%; to compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 9 and add the two percentages.

Preferred Experience:
Current BLS training and certification is preferred
CT, IR, MRI, US experience is preferred.
One year Radiology experience is preferred.

Physical Requirements: Physical demands are usually moderate: Lifting objects up to 40 pounds, moving specialized equipment and assisting patients from a gurney to a procedure or scan table. Occasionally, the technician assists with the moving of heavy equipment or large patients, but this is done with the assistance of others to minimize the danger to the individual. Since many of the imaging procedures are performed using x-ray, the incumbent frequently works in and around x-ray producing equipment, requiring the use of a lead apron and other protective equipment. During a procedure, standing for extended periods while wearing a lead apron, is necessary. The incumbent must also work at a computer desk at times.
