Duties
Help co-lead the development and implementation of the Mendenhall Glacier Recreation Area (MGRA) interpretation and conservation education plans; working with team members from a variety of offices.
Oversee the interpretive program to ensure the highest quality digital, social, and multi-media products inform and educate a diverse public about area natural phenomena and Forest Service programs.
Participates in the recreation fee program at Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center (MGVC); working closely with special use administrators, and bookstore management to ensure collections meet agency protocols.
Manage the natural and cultural resources in the area, including salmon and bears, for interpretive as well as conservation benefits.
Provide for safety of visitors and employees. Coordinate and manage facilities so they are ready for public use and enjoyment.
Build and maintain relationships with co-workers, contractors, cooperators, permittees, government agencies (federal, state, local) and the general public.
Supervise a staff of approximately 10 employees and interns at grade levels up to GS-7. Supervisory duties are performed for 20% or less of the time.
Requirements

Degree: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included a major field of study in behavioral or social science; or related disciplines appropriate to the position.
OR
Combination of education and experience that provided the applicant with knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field.
OR
Four years of appropriate experience that demonstrated that the applicant has acquired knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field.
GS-0401 Series:

Degree: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included a major field of study in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.
OR
Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in a major field of study that included 24 semester hours in course work in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. Related course work generally refers to courses that may be accepted as part of the program major.
OR
Combination of education and experience that included 24 semester hours in course work in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position, AND experience sufficient to demonstrate that I possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform work in the occupation that is comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of a full 4-year course of study with a major in the appropriate field needed to perform the work of the occupation.
In addition to meeting the basic educational requirement listed above, you must also possess experience and/or directly related education in the amounts listed below.
Specialized Experience Requirement:
For the GS-09 level: You must have one year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 in the Federal service. Examples of specialized experience can include: Assisted with the management of a visitor services program. Developed interpretive programs, daily work schedules and audited and coached others in an on-site interpretive program. Assisted with the planning day to day activities and recommended changes in the type or level of use of recreational facilities. Developed digital, social, or other multi-media products to inform and educate a diverse public.
OR
Master's or equivalent graduate degree or two (2) full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree in a social science, natural resources management, or biological science field of study that is directly related to the position.
OR
Combination of graduate level education (beyond 18 semester hours) and specialized experience that is directly related to this position that together meets the qualification requirements for this position.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
