Salary: $82 830 - 107 680 per year

Duties

If selected for this position, you will join a well-respected team that is responsible for providing substantive legal support to the District of Utah. The incumbent will provide a variety of complex paralegal support and legal research assignments requiring significant knowledge of legislative, administrative, and judicial decisions. Typical work assignments will include: Supervising subordinate staff. Planning work to be accomplished by subordinates, setting goals and priorities, and preparing schedules for completion of work. Evaluating work performances of subordinates and provides technical advice and assistance to resolve problems referred by staff. Performing complex legal research, analysis, and writing (i.e., correspondence, legal documents, etc.) Reviewing and editing legal pleadings and briefs to ensure accuracy, proper format, correct citations, and compliance. Assisting attorneys in pretrial by preparing, scheduling, reviewing, and organizing discovery; notifying, interviewing, and managing witnesses; and researching case law. Providing advice to attorneys and other legal support staff on the most effective and efficient ways to prepare, present and maintain a variety of administrative legal documents.

Requirements

  • You must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
  • Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre-employment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.
  • You must be registered for Selective Service, if applicable.
  • If selected, you may be required to complete a one year probationary period.
  • If selected, you will be subject to the satisfactory completion of a one year supervisory or managerial probationary period unless this requirement has been met previously.
  • Time-in-Grade: Federal employees must meet time-in-grade requirements within 30 days after the closing date of this announcement.
  • You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days after the closing date of this announcement and before placement in the position.

Qualifications

GS-12: To be eligible at the GS-12 level, applicants must have one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector as defined below. Specialized experience is defined as: Applying advanced knowledge of legal principles and concepts to interpret a body of law, regulations, precedents, and practices in support of trial proceedings. Examples of specialized experience include: 1) Assisting attorneys in on topics such as local law, court procedures, legal research, documentation preparation, case management and office procedures; 2) Delivering formal or informal presentations regarding legal or administrative procedures to appropriate audiences; 3) Preparing assigned cases in accordance with applicable laws, rules, regulations, precedents, policies, office practices and established procedures; 4) Providing verbal and written communication skills necessary to communicate and explain findings and recommendations to assigned attorneys.
