Duties

If selected for this position, you will join a well-respected team that is responsible for providing substantive legal support to the United States Attorney's Office, Southern District of Illinois. The incumbent will provide a variety of complex paralegal support assignments relating to the forfeiture of money, real and personal property to the U.S. Government. Typical work assignments will include: Serving as a technical authority in the legal specialty area of asset forfeiture by applying a depth and variety of problem-solving analysis, interpretation, and evaluation to resolve complicated civil and criminal matters. Developing policies and procedures to be followed by attorney and support staff. Applying an in-depth knowledge of the various laws, court, and/or administrative decisions and interpretations related to Federal forfeiture to perform substantive research, evaluation, and analysis in support of forfeiture work. Preparing complex legal documents such as legal pleadings necessary to commence judicial forfeiture proceedings; subsequent motions and papers; and propose orders to accomplish forfeiture, settlement, or dismissal. Receiving, examining, and evaluating new and complex cases referred for judicial forfeiture proceedings by seizing agencies for case litigation worthiness, appropriate titles of law, and pertinent case law. Serving as the regional Consolidated Asset Tracking System (CATS) point of contact and offering training to support staff, attorneys, and contractors in federal offices throughout the United States.

Requirements

  • You must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
  • Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre-employment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.
  • You must be registered for Selective Service, if applicable.
  • If selected, you may be required to complete a one year probationary period.
  • Time-in-Grade: Federal employees must meet time-in-grade requirements within 30 days after the closing date of this announcement.
  • You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days after the closing date of this announcement and before placement in the position.

Qualifications

GS-12: To be eligible at the GS-12 level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level. Specialized experience is defined as follows: performing specialized legal research in support of asset forfeiture; receiving, examining, and evaluating cases referred for judicial proceedings; preparing legal documents to commence judicial proceedings; and assisting with and/or conducting training in an asset tracking system. Career Transition Assistance Plan (CTAP)-The CTAP provides eligible surplus and displaced competitive service employees in the Department of Justice with selection priority over other candidates for competitive service vacancies.
