The incumbent serves as a Therapy Assistant (Rehabilitation Therapy Assistant) for the Armed Forces Retirement Home, AFRH-Washington, Healthcare Services, Rehabilitation Services and provides direct therapeutic care to a diverse geriatric patient population with a variety of patient diagnoses.
Duties
As a/an Therapy Assistant, you will:
Provide direct therapeutic care to a diverse geriatric patient population with a variety of patient diagnoses to include but are not limited to: orthopedic, neuromuscular disorders, cognitive and perceptual disorders, cardio-pulmonary disorders, chronic pain, arthritic conditions, psychosocial disorders, and ambulatory and non-ambulatory patients.
Instruct patients in use of and care of prosthetics, canes, rollators, splints, wheel chairs, adaptive devices, and braces.
Perform general tests related to orientation, balance, and strength.
Maintain equipment in proper working condition by cleaning and monitoring temperature controls and reports any malfunctioning equipment to the Rehab Supervisor for disposition or repair.
Monitor and oversee the clinic's daily operations and administrative processes.
Qualifications
You must meet the following requirements by the closing date of this announcement.
Specialized experience is one year of experience at the GS-05 level or equivalent that has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position. Specialized experience includes:
-Providing therapeutic treatment to residents dealing with physical, emotional, and/or social disorders and communicating modifications or suggestions to supervisor for residents' treatment plans. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include work as an assistant to one of the specialized therapies such as occupational, physical, manual arts, corrective, or educational therapy; or experience gained as an assistant or aid in patient care, social work, or psychology where the duties involved actual participation in physical medicine and activities of a hospital or clinic.

You may qualify based on education directly related to the work of the position. One full year of graduate education meets the requirement. Rehabilitation Counseling, Kinesiology, Exercise Science/Physiology, or Allied Health are examples of majors which could be directly related to this position.

A combination of education and experience: In order to qualify under this option, you must have a combination the meets 100% or more of the requirement. This can be calculated as follows: First, determine your total qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level; then determine your education as a percentage of the education required for the grade level; and then add the two percentages. Only graduate education in excess of the amount required for the next lower grade level may be used to qualify applicants for this position. One year of graduate level education is generally considered to be 18 months. Therefore, if you have nine months of graduate level education and six months of qualifying experience, you would be considered qualified on the combination of education and experience.
SPECIAL NOTE: Long-term care experience and/or interacting with geriatric patients is highly desired.
