The Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center is seeking a highly qualified candidate for the Occupational Therapy Assistant position.

Duties

This position is part of the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Service (PM&RS) at the Robert J. Dole VAMC in Wichita, Kansas. The OTA provides treatment that promotes the function, prevention, remediation, and rehabilitation of acute and chronic physical and psychosocial dysfunction. The OTA administers and monitors therapeutic interventions based on goals formulated by an Occupational Therapist but must be able to carry out a general treatment plan without the direct involvement of an Occupational Therapist. The duties and responsibilities of this position are carried out within the medical center, and occasionally in the home setting, including various clinical, administrative, and inpatient and outpatient patient care areas associated with PM&RS. Duties include but are not limited to: Education & Experience in Safe Patient Handling & Mobility per OTA GS-9 in Handbook 5005/145 Part II Appendix G22 Active participant in the committees and other services related to Safe Patient Handling & Mobility. Serve as a consultant or resource to others related to the specialty topic of Safe Patient Handling & Mobility. Participate in projects including research related to the topic of Safe Patient Handling & Mobility and topics related to this specialty. Provide mentoring to others related to the specialty of Safe Patient Handling & Mobility. Participate in training and meetings provided from a VISN or National to maintain subject matter expert level of knowledge in Safe Patient Handling & Mobility. Assists the Occupational Therapist (OTR/L) with screening, evaluation, and re-evaluation process by implementing specifically delegated assessments as designated by the OTR/L and providing verbal or written report of observations and client capacities to the OTR/L. Plans, schedules, prioritizes, and carries out treatment interventions with a high degree of and in coordination with other VA disciplines based on completed assessment. Assists with or independently renders specialized occupational therapy treatments and procedures based on the assessed needs of the patient. Monitors and records veteran's condition during treatment. Documents patient interventions and responses, advising OTR/L of pertinent findings. Prepares written and oral communication to fellow therapists, physicians, social workers, case managers, nurses, and all other professionals concerned with the patient's care. Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education: Individuals must meet at least one of the requirements below; Have an Associate's [or higher] degree in occupational therapy from a college or university accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA). OR Completion of a military training program in an OTA program accredited by the ACOTE. Basic Requirements Continued Certification: OTAs must have written documentation that they have passed the entry-level certification examination for OTAs administered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT). Licensure: OTAs must hold a full, current, and unrestricted state license to practice occupational therapy in a State, Territory, a Commonwealth of the United States (i.e. Puerto Rico) or in the District of Columbia. English Language Proficiency: OTA candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English [in accordance with 38 U.S.C. § 7403(f).] Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements for employment, the following criteria must be met when determining the grade of candidates. Occupational Therapy Assistant, GS-09 Education and Experience: One year of creditable experience comparable to the next lower grade level which demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities related to the duties of the position being filled. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate one of the following: (a) A minimum of 2000 hours of clinical practice directly in the specialty area and completion of 60 contact hours of continuing education directly related to the specialty area. This time must be within the past five years; OR (b) Certification in specialty area; OR (c) An additional academic degree related to the healthcare mission. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: In addition to the experience and education requirements above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs; (a) Skill in the utilization of delegated assessment tools to assist in developing individualized treatment plan related to specialty area. (b) Skill in developing protocols and procedures for specialized intervention techniques and programs. (c) Ability to independently implement treatment plan using specialty skills and complex techniques. (d) Ability to provide complex evidence-based interventions related to clinical specialty. (e) Ability to provide consultation and mentoring to other healthcare practitioners and stakeholders in area of specialty. Preferred Experience: Experience in Safe Patient Handling and Mobility is highly preferred.
