This position serves as the Painter for the Overton Brooks Veterans Affairs Medical Center (OBVAMC). The OBVAMC covers 40+/- acres and approximately 720,000 gross building square footage and has three CBOC locations, Longview and Texarkana, Texas, and Monroe Louisiana. This position works under the direct supervision of the Chief, Maintenance and Operations Section.
Duties
Duties include:
Selects and uses the proper equipment and tools such as brushes, rollers, spray guns, compressors, scraper, straight edges, scaffold and ladders.
Repair cracks in masonry, deteriorated caulking compounds and other materials to assure surfaces are prepared to receive paint or wall covering.
Install, modify, and repair walls.
Installs wallpaper to be secure, smooth and clean, without wrinkles, gaps or overlaps.
The painter does general painting as well as per forming more difficult types of finishing.
Mixes all painting materials to ensure uniformity of color, complete dispersion of pigment and uniform composition. They Installs vinyl, yarn type, construction and face wall coverings.
Assists in marking streets and cleaning and caring for equipment.
Embosses signs, paints traffic lines and directional signs by lettering or stencil, paint boundary fences, light posts and fire hydrants.
Applies special finishing techniques such as marbling and graining.
General repair works with cracks in masonry, deteriorated caulking compounds and other materials to assure surfaces are prepared to receive paint or wall covering so no marks or rough areas are visible when paint or wall covering is in place.
Paints and refinishing furniture, wood and metal, such as desk cabinets, chairs, operating room and laundry equipment.
Plans and lays out the work plan for repair works with cracks in masonry, deteriorated caulking compounds and other materials to assure surfaces are prepared to receive paint or wall covering so no marks or rough areas are visible when paint or wall covering is in place.
Knows how to redecorate offices, wards, corridors, dining halls, living quarters, and shop buildings.
Works from building plans, blueprints, and sketches to plan and lay out the routing painting activities with dry wall within and out of the buildings, sidewalk.
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday; 8:00am-4:30pm; subject to change based on the needs of the facility.

Physical Requirements: The painter paints, repairs, and installations from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms, and where the systems and equipment worked on are in hard-to-reach places. This requires the painter to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. The painter frequently handle, lift, carry, and set up parts and equipment that weigh up to 23 kilograms (50 pounds). Occasionally, the painter may lift and carry items that weigh over 23 kilograms (50 pounds). Painters are able to perform work while wearing a respirator or other breathing apparatus.
Working Conditions: The work is done inside and outside, and is usually dirty, dusty, and greasy. The painters are sometimes required to paints, carry out installations and repairs in areas where bad smelling fumes are present. There is frequent exposure to the possibility of uncomfortable heat conditions. The painters are frequently exposed to the possibility of strains, cuts, scrapes, bruises, burns, and infections. They are occasionally exposed to the possibility of broken bones and exposure to hazardous materials. Incumbent will be subject to the hazards normally encountered in the trades work. Position must be able to work during any emergency repair day or night, and work long hours until such job is accomplished or service to the medical center has been adequately restored.
