Duties

Selection at the GS 05 or GS 06 level, the incumbent will perform the duties of the position, with a reduced level of responsibility and/or difficulty, while receiving on-the-job trainee assignments or other appropriate training. At full performance level, duties include, but not limited to, the following: Serves as the primary focal point for collecting, analyzing/evaluating, interpreting, summarizing, documenting, storing and retrieving resource data. Identifies and/or coordinates equipment needs, and support needed for field studies. Provides resource monitoring information to the field staff for the preparation of the field work. Assists the Monitoring Coordinator with the planning and execution of all resource monitoring including multiple indicator monitoring (MIM) for stream habitat, and assessment inventory and monitoring (AIM) strategy and wetland classification.

Qualifications

In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the qualification requirements - please be sure to include this information in your resume. GS 05:You must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-04 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: assisting with collecting field data in support of monitoring programs; assisting in implementation of a resource monitoring program that evaluates the effectiveness of land management actions; documenting field observations, navigating outside through various land types to accomplish duties with supervisor oversight; and the ability to work as a member of a group collecting data for a monitoring program. -OR- Education: Successfully completed of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semesters in any combination of scientific or technical courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics. At least 6 semester hours of courses must have been directly related to the position to be filled. - OR- Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate undergraduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. GS 06:You must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: navigating outside through various land types to accomplish duties with minimal supervisor oversight; the ability to work as a member of a group or individual collecting data for a monitoring program using Global Positioning System (GPS) and Geographic Information System (GIS) programs and tablets; complete Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) of monitoring data and field data collections and compile data to be used in analyses of natural resource and ecological monitoring programs; and assist higher graded employees with data analyses for reporting document to inform management decisions. -OR- Education: Successfully completed one full year of graduate education (18 semester hours) directly related to the work of the position. - OR- Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. GS 07:You must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-06 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: leading and scheduling field crews with collecting field data in support of monitoring programs; implementing a resource monitoring program that evaluates the effectiveness of land management actions; documenting field observations; independently navigating outside through various land types to accomplish duties; the ability to work as a member of a group, team lead, or individual collecting data for a monitoring program; using Global Positioning System (GPS) and Geographic Information System (GIS) programs and tablets to efficiently collect data; complete Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) of monitoring data and field data collections and compile data to be used in analyses of natural resource and ecological monitoring programs; use experience and judgement to resolve common work problems and to summarize data effectively; assist higher-graded employees with data analyses for reporting document to inform management decisions; and ability to communicate and work with members of the public such as with permittees, partners, recreationist and private landowners. -OR- Education: Successfully completed one full year of graduate education (18 semester hours) directly related to the work of the position. - OR- Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement. Physical Demands: Monitoring work requires regular and recurring periods of physical exertion including walking, bending, climbing, crouching, or stooping over rough, uneven, rocky surfaces or mountainous terrain. Monitoring protocols require sufficient physical strength to use manual hand tools such as shovels, trowels, or screening devices. Monitoring work occasionally requires lifting moderately heavy items such as equipment and samples. Data analysis is performed in an office setting with no special physical demands. Work Environment: Monitoring data is collected at field sites which are outdoor settings and therefore subject to the risks and discomforts arising from remoteness (e.g., distance from services such as medical offices), weather (e.g., extreme temperatures and precipitation), wildlife (e.g., bites and stings), and diverse terrain (e.g., steep, rocky, or unstable footing). Accessing field sites requires the use of two- or four-wheel drive vehicles and comes with the risk of vehicular accidents. Safety instructions and risk management protocols will be communicated by the supervisor prior to initiating field work. Individuals driving a government vehicle are required to complete a Defensive Driving Course.
