Duties
Serve as a crewmember protecting life and property.
Respond to automatic fire alarms, natural gas leaks, wildland fires and fights fire.
Firefighting tasks of moderate difficulty involving structures, equipment, and facilities; crashed and burning aircraft; and fuel, chemical, and brush fires.
Perform fire protection inspections in areas where no unusual fire hazards are expected and the potential severity is low.
Perform maintenance, operational, housekeeping, emergency, and stand by duties.
Operate radios, fire reporting systems (Emergency Reporting), and computer modem for hazardous material information and performs maintenance tasks on firefighting apparatus, equipment, and facilities.
First responder to medical emergencies and performs emergency medical procedures.
Perform initial and on-going focused patient assessment and physical examination; determines priority of patient care based on assessment findings; takes, records, and monitors patients baseline vital signs.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Works a 72-hour weekly/144-hour pay period tour of duty.
- Must have and maintain a valid state driver’s license.
- Must be certified within the DoD Fire and Emergency Services Fire Fighter Certification system at the Firefighter I, Firefighter II, Airport Firefighter, Hazardous Materials Awareness
- and Hazardous Materials Operations Driver/Operator Pumper, Driver/Operator ARFF, Driver/Operator Mobile Water Supply and Driver/Operator Aerial.
- Must obtain and maintain NWCG Type II firefighter (S190/130) within 12 months of hire date in accordance with DoD Instruction 6055.6 and DoD Manual 6055.6M.
- Must maintain a current Basic Life Support for the Healthcare Provider (CPR and AED) card.
- This position has been designated as a mandatory drug testing position. Required to sign DA Form 5019. Random drug testing required.
- Heavy physical effort is required in the frequent handling of objects such as cylinders and extinguishers weighing 45 lbs or more. Employee may be required to lift/carry personnel in emergency situations.
- Duties require full use of both arms, both legs, and fingers to bend, turn, pull, crawl, kneel, and climb for such tasks as use of aerial ladders, firefighting equipment controls, arranging/connecting hoses etc.
- Employee may be subject to periodic (e.g. annual) medical examinations following appointment to determine fitness for continued performance of the duties of the position.
- Position includes a continuing requirement to satisfy job-oriented training.
- Must be able to possess and maintain a current, valid state motor vehicle operator license to operate vehicles up to one ton.
- During rescue operations, incumbent may come into contact with human blood or other potential infectious materials which may result in possible exposure to blood borne pathogens.
- The employee must possess and maintain current National Registry and/or State Emergency Medical Technician certification commensurate with the level of their duties.
- This position is covered as a rigorous/primary position.
- Employee must remain clean-shaven to insure integrity of mask fit for breathing apparatus.
- Required to complete pre-employment and periodic subsequent medical examination in accordance with DoDM 6055.06 to ensure continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Specialized Experience:
GS-04 Grade Level: One year of specialized experience which includes experience that equipped the applicant to perform the duties of this position such as: (1) Controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; AND (2) Rescue operations. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-03).

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education by 60. Add the two percentages.
GS-05 Grade Level: One year of specialized experience which includes experience that equipped the applicant to perform the duties of this position such as: (1) Controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; (2) Rescue operations; (3) Detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards; AND (4) Operation of fire communications equipment. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education by 120. Add the two percentages.
GS-06 Grade Level: One year of specialized experience which includes experience that equipped the applicant to perform the duties of this position such as: (1) Controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; (2) Rescue operations; (3) Detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards; (4) Operation of fire communications equipment; AND (5) Controlling hazardous materials incidents (GS-05).
GS-07 Grade Level: One year of specialized experience which includes experience that equipped the applicant to perform the duties of this position such as: (1) Controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; (2) Rescue operations; (3) Detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards; (4) Operation of fire communications equipment; (5) Controlling hazardous materials incidents; AND (6) Developing, implementing, or providing training in fire protection and prevention. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).
Required Certifications:
In addition to meeting the specialized experience requirement above, applicants must also possess certifications certified through DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification System, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), or the Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (PRO-Board) in accordance with DoD 6055.06-M AND a State or National Registry EMT Certification Card indicating a future expiration date when applicable commensurate with the level of their duties.
GS-04: Applicants must be certified as Firefighter I, Firefighter II, HazMat Awareness and HazMat Operations. Applicant must obtain Airport Firefighter (ARFF) within 12 months of hire.
GS-05: Applicants must be Certified as Firefighter I, Firefighter II, Airport Firefighter, HazMat Awareness and HazMat Operations. The applicant must obtain and maintain a current Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider (CPR/AED) card.
GS-06: In addition to the GS-05 level requirements, must be certified as a Driver/Operator ARFF and Driver/Operator Pumper. The applicant must obtain and maintain a current Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider (CPR/AED) card. Applicant must obtain NWCG Firefighter Type II (S-130/190) within 12 Months of hire.
GS-07: In addition to the GS-06 level requirements, must be certified as a Driver/Operator Aerial and Driver/Operator Mobile Water Supply (MWS). The applicant must possess and maintain a current National Registry (NREMT) and/or valid state Emergency Medical Technician Certification and Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider (CPR/AED) card within 12 months of hire. Applicant must obtain NWCG Firefighter Type II (S-130/190) within 12 Months of hire.

Time in Grade Requirement:
For the GS-05 level: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks may not be promoted more than 2 grades within the preceding 52 weeks.
For the GS-06 level: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-05).
For the GS-07 level: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-06).
Education
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you may qualify if your education meets the definitions below:
Education Substitution GS-04 Grade Level Only: Appropriate firefighter training may be substituted for experience. Successful completion of a 2-year course of study in an accredited college or university in Fire Training, Fire Science, or other related fields of study is qualifying for the GS-04.
Education Substitution GS-05 Grade Level Only: Appropriate firefighter training may be substituted for experience. Successful completion of a 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university with major study in Fire Science, Fire Training, or other related fields of study is qualifying for the GS-05.
Education Substitution GS-06 Grade Level Only: There is no education substitution at the GS-06 grade level.
Education Substitution GS-07 Grade Level Only: There is no education substitution at the GS-07 grade level.
Only degrees from an accredited college or university recognized by the Department of Education are acceptable to meet positive education requirements or to substitute education for experience.
