This position is located in the Research Access and Collection Development Unit, Geography and Map Division, Special Collections Directorate, Researcher And Collections Services. The position description number for this position is 447447. The salary range indicated reflects the locality pay adjustments for the Washington, D.C., Metropolitan area.  This is a non-supervisory, bargaining unit position.  

Duties

Provides comprehensive reference services in response to requests received in various forms. Communicates with a wide variety of patrons with non-routine questions regarding access, handling, and use of the Geography and Map Division's materials. Interviews researchers, analyzes their questions and requirements, and recommends material appropriate to their needs. Orients readers to the reading room and its services. Guides researchers in employing search strategies that tap the full range of the Division's online and manual reference tools and resources to meet the researcher's need. Provides information on the collections, finding tools, and relevant reference sources. Uses knowledge of information sources in other institutions or service units outside the agency to inform researcher needs. Locates information, often of a specialized or technical nature, from a wide variety of published and unpublished sources and electronic databases related to the field of cartography, history of cartography, and map librarianship. Appropriately directs researchers to collections and specialists elsewhere in the Library.

Applicants must have had progressively responsible experience and training sufficient in scope and quality to furnish them with an acceptable level of the following knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of the position without more than normal supervision. Ability to provide reference and research services.** Ability to interact collaboratively and provide consultation and liaison services.** Knowledge of map librarianship. Ability to develop and manage library collections. Ability to communicate in writing. Ability to utilize information technology to perform library services. Ability to communicate effectively other than in writing.
