Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis. You will be placed in a pay status and can expect to work a minimum of 25 pay periods not to exceed a maximum of 26 pay periods. You will be place in a non-pay status from approximately 11/5 to 11/18 unless other work exists that can be assigned to you during this period.
Duties
This position is assigned to the Facilities Division Big Bend National Park and directly reports to the Supervisor of Roads Maintenance. Most of the time for this position will be spent in the recycling center located in Panther Junction Big Bend National Park. This position will collect recycle materials in Castolon, Rio Grande Village, Chisos Basin, and Panther Junction.
The incumbent will collect recyclable materials such as plastic, cardboard, metal, and aluminum for multiply locations around the park. Recyclables will be sorted and processed at the recycle center in Panther Junction. The incumbent will be required to lift heavy bags, load and unload materials and other cargo from trucks and trailers. This position will require rigorous physical activity for extended periods of time. This position will operate a forklift, bailers, trucks, trailers, and glass pulverizer.Operates motor vehicles and performs pre-vehicle operation inspection such as fluid levels, lights, brakes, and operational procedures, greasing moving parts, changing oil, fuel and air filters, cleaning and washing vehicles, and minor parts changing repairs. The incumbent will be exposed to a variety of seasonal weather conditions while working outdoors. Will be exposed to heat, biting insects, dust, dirt, wind, and rain. May work with hazardous chemicals and around moving equipment, paints, solvents, etc.
Area Information: Big Bend National Park encompasses 801,000 acres of Chihuahuan Desert with varied scenery and diversity of plant and animal life. The park community consists of about 250 people, including employees of the NPS, Concession, Border Patrol, Postal Service, School, and their families. A state-accredited elementary school (K-8) is located at Panther Junction. The park has a post office, gas stations, camper stores, restaurant, and lodge. Recreational opportunities include hiking, bird watching, photography, backcountry camping, bicycling, and river rafting. An active employee/community association sponsors social events throughout the year. A U.S. Customs Port of Entry provides access to visit Boquillas, Mexico across from Rio Grande Village. A passport is required to visit Boquillas, Mexico and to return through the Boquillas Port of Entry. Elevation at Panther Junction is 3,800 feet. The climate is generally pleasant with hot summers (90-110 degrees F.) and mild winters (30-60 degrees F.) Terlingua (a small town 24 miles away) has a state-accredited high school (no bus service), lodging, restaurants, small grocery and hardware store, churches, and a bank. Lajitas (47 miles away) has limited shopping, a medical clinic, lodging, restaurants, golf course, and churches. Alpine, Texas (100 miles away) has most necessities, including supermarkets, stores, a hospital, pharmacies, churches, and a college university. SCREEN OUT: Have experience that demonstrates the ability to perform work as a Motor Vehicle Operator, WG-5703-06, and assisting journey-level, or other higher graded workers; my experience included work such as operating gasoline or diesel-powered heavy equipment, the use of motor vehicles of a gross vehicle weight up to 26,000 pounds transport material to and from the work site. I have experience using equipment and building maintenance and trail and road repair projects. The work is spot-checked by supervisor and evaluated for quality and neatness.
