About the Position: Pohakuloa Training Area (PTA) is located on the island of Hawai'i in the high plateau between Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea and the Hualalai volcanic mountains. It includes a small military airstrip known as Bradshaw Army Airfield. The area of 108,863 acres (440.55 km2) is the largest United States Department of Defense installation in the state of Hawaii, or anywhere in the Pacific.
Duties
Advise personnel of range conditions such as terrain matters, areas open for reconnaissance and availability for various training areas.
Investigate incidences which caused personnel injury or property damage.
Inform users of proposed firing problems involving artillery, mortar position and use of laser test, training.
Inform users of factors affecting various locations which might limit, restrict, or interfere with proposed locations, the presence or possibility of duds, endangered habitat areas, historical sites, or airspace restrictions.
Perform range training assistance and technical support.
Inspect ranges and training areas which require walking through rough terrain and wearing protective gear.
Operate the Range facility Management Support System (RFMSS) on a government computer work station and Local Area Network (LAN).
Assist in implementing prescribed procedures during emergencies that include MEDEVAC operations and weapons/ammunition malfunctions.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- A current State or Federal OF346 driver's license is required; must be able to operate both a four-wheel drive vehicle with standard transmission and an off-road all-terrain vehicle.
- Must be able to attend and successfully complete appropriate Range Operations Professional Development courses (ROPD) per TC25-8 / Chapter 4 and 5 guidelines within the first year of employment or as scheduling and funding allow.
- Rotation between major training areas, shift work, rotating shifts and weekends/federal holiday work and overtime may be required.
- Duties involve working with or in close proximity to explosives or incendiary material in an environment where there is frequent, close proximity to unexploded ordnance. The work involves frequent exposure to foul weather conditions.
- Pre-employment physical is required. Incumbent is required to carry passengers. Incumbent may be required to carry and/or lift up to 50 lbs.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes providing assistance to military units conducting training in ranges, AND assisting in the inspection and maintenance of ranges, maneuver areas and training areas. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).

Education: One full year of graduate level education in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as Safety and Occupational Safety.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18. Add the two percentages.
