The Montana VA Health Care System, Sterile Processing Service is currently recruiting for one (1) Lead Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing), at the Billings Ambulatory Surgery Center.

Duties

Major duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to: Assists in the orientation and training for the Sterile Processing Department personnel. Assists in the efforts for the continuous performance improvement of provided services to ensure the goals of excellence in clinical outcomes and customer satisfaction. Assist staff in the proper use and utilization of the tracking system in order to provide sterile instruments and supplies in an efficient, accurate, and professional manner to all its customers. Distribute and prioritize workload among fellow Medical Supply Technicians GS-0622-3/4/5/6, in accordance with established workflow and/or job specializations, to complete tasks in a timely accurate manner. Responsible for all activities that occur in the department during their tour of duty to include: receiving instruments, trays, etc., processing through decontamination, assembly, sterilization and building case carts. Spot checks work in progress and assists in reviewing completed work to see that instructions, work sequences, procedures, methods and deadlines have been met. Compiles testing and reports for supervisors on an as needed basis aiding in the overview of the department. Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: U.S. Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Basic experience, OR education, OR experience AND education combination: Experience. Six months of experience that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work or provides an understanding of the work OR Education. One year above high school that included at least 6 semester hours in health care related courses such as sterile processing, nursing assistant, hospital corpsman, and operating room and surgical technician courses or other courses related to the position. OR Experience AND education combination. Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable. English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in spoken and written English. Grade Determination: GS-7 In addition to the basic requirements listed above, applicants must meet the GS-7 requirements listed below: Experience. One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities, KSAs: In addition to the GS-7 experience requirements above, the candidates must demonstrate the following KSAs below: 1). Ability to instruct staff on the correct procedures and protocols for completing assignments. 2). Skill in communicating with staff to ensure compliance with written directives, rules and regulations. 3). Skill in interpersonal relationships in dealing with employees, team leaders, and managers. 4). Knowledge of sterility principles in order to instruct staff on decontamination procedures. 5). Ability to lead individuals, manage priorities, and schedule work assignments. Preferred Experience: Level 2 certification, VHA SPS Certification Examination References: VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G47. The full performance level of this vacancy is a GS-7. Physical Requirements: This work is performed in various settings throughout the facility, to include but not limited to, decontamination, scope room, sterile storage, Package & Prep and clinical departments. The employee is required to work in a multitude of temperature variants. The work requires standing, walking during the entire workday, with frequent bending and lifting of instrumentation (occasionally weighing as much as 30 pounds). The work requires dexterity and visual acuity for manipulating, disassembly and assembly of instrumentation. The employee is required to rotate between carefully controlled clean environments and the contaminated area of decontamination on a regular and recurring basis. The employee must wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment, PPE as required. Including, but not limited to, hospital provided surgical attire, hair covers, beard covers, shoe covers and hospital dedicated shoes. The employee may be exposed to hazardous and loud noises within the facility.
