The New Mexico VA Healthcare Network is recruiting for a Medical Instrument Technician (Electrocardiograph) located in the Telemetry Unit. The technician will operate and monitor electrocardiographic equipment. The technician provides continuous cardiac rhythm interpretation and reporting of monitor tracing of patients to appropriate clinical staff.

Duties

Monitor electrocardiogram (EKG) tracings. Operate and monitor EKG equipment Maintain patient cardiac rhythm tracing record and other accompanying documentation. Follow emergency procedures Evaluate the integrity of equipment both prior to placement on patient and during the patient's telemetry monitoring Evaluate patient for discharge from telemetry in collaboration with providers Maintain and keep track of telemetry equipment as patients are discharged and transferred Work Schedule: Variable; Rotating Shifts (may discuss during interview process) Telework: Not Available Virtual: This is not a virtual position. Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: Citizenship. Citizenship of the United States. Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Proficiency. Must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VHA standards. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics related to the duties of the positions to be filled. This would be experience which provided knowledge of the equipment, standard tests and procedures, and typical readings including arrhythmias and abnormalities. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs: Knowledge of typical patient reactions and signs of distress including the ability to recognize, report and treat potentially lethal arrhythmias. Knowledge of common equipment settings and standardized procedures plus knowledge of common errors and corrective measures. Ability to modify procedures/positions to obtain the correct results with patients with complicating conditions such as amputations, Parkinson's disease, structural defects, and scar tissue. Ability to act as a mentor or preceptor to lower graded technicians. Ability to conduct in-service training on the EKG equipment and related instrumentation. Certification: No certification is required; however, it is desirable that employees at this level have BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support) and ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certifications. References: VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G27- MIT EKG Qualification Standard. The applicant will be required to demonstrate EKG competency (ability to accurately identify and measure rhythms and arrhythmias in our patients) prior to the completion of orientation in order to independently perform the essential functions of their position and to ensure patient safety. This competency must also be demonstrated on an annual basis, or more frequently if needed. The applicant may only take the official exam twice, and not allowed to use external sources (closed book test). If the applicant fails the official exam twice, they will not be permitted to work in an area requiring telemetry. The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-07. Physical Requirements: This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring patients and objects may be required. Mechanical lifts are provided. The MIT may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and will be required to don protective clothing while providing patient care and servicing/cleaning equipment. The MIT may occasionally experience patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The MIT must be a mature and sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations and able to shift priorities based on patient needs. Lifting and transportation of bulky supplies and equipment are required.
