The following are the duties of this position at the full working level. If this vacancy includes more than one grade and you are selected at a lower grade level, you will have the opportunity to learn to perform these duties and receive training to help you grow in this position.
This position involves detailed support duties related to the examination of tax returns performed by Internal
Revenue Examiners, and serves as an integral part in completing and closing the examination. Identifies and
reports discrepancies and inconsistencies in the case file including review of the case file to ensure the
appropriate Disposal Code is used for the case closure.
Inputs information to update and retrieve case and related status and information using database systems such as
the Examination Return Control System (ERCS), the Audit Information Management System (AIMS) and/or the
Report Generation Software (RGS). Monitors case status and suspense items, moving cases as appropriate,
independently preparing and assembling work papers and exhibits to complement completed cases.
Extracts and reviews pertinent statistics or information using ERCS and RGS. Provides input to update
monitoring systems used in support of Campus Compliance Unit (CCU) Strategic Business Plans and Balanced
Measures goals and objectives. Performs other related duties and special projects as assigned.
Inputs individual Form 4502 reports (or local equivalent) into ERCS. Retrieves data and provides account of
time expended on individual and related case categories and other 4502 time expenditures, as requested by team
managers.
Verifies completeness and accuracy of case controls to ensure compliance with established procedures and
formats. Extracts ERCS data on statutes, analyzing their accuracy and alerts the team manager and the tax
examiner to any issues to ensure protection of the Government's interests. Determines usefulness and
applicability of certain data based on technical review.
Qualifications
Federal experience is not required. The experience may have been gained in the public sector, private sector or Volunteer Service. One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-time work is considered on a prorated basis. You must meet the following requirements by the closing date of this announcement:
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE GS-05: To be minimally qualified for this position you must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service.Specialized experience for this position includes:Experience that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position and is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be qualifying, your experience should be sufficient to demonstrate basic verification and computation techniques and methods, including skill in exercising accuracy with figures; Basic bookkeeping techniques to post various documents; and accomplishment in preparing and assembling work papers. Experience of basic tax law changes, data processing functions and examination programs, e.g., Tax Shelters.
OR
EDUCATION: A Bachelor's degree or four (4) years of education above high school in any field of study from an accredited college or university.
OR
COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: A combination of education and experience equivalent to that described One (1) year or twelve (12) months of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade.
AND
TIME AFTER COMPETITIVE APPOINTMENT: By the closing date (or if this is an open continuous announcement, by the cut-off date) specified in this job announcement, current civilian employees must have completed at least 90 days of federal civilian service since their latest non-temporary appointment from a competitive referral certificate, known as time after competitive appointment.
