The San Diego VA Health Care System is currently recruiting a Biomedical Equipment Support Specialist (Biomedical Information Systems) in the Engineering Service in San Diego, CA. The incumbent provides clinical and administrative support to staff, patients, and administrators for all matters of concern relating to the facility wide lifecycle management of medical equipment.
Duties
Major duties include but are not limited to:
Implements and plans for new and emerging technologies including but not limited to diagnostic modalities, network management and storage, and virtual data centers.
Maintains functional knowledge of relevant safety codes and standards of regulatory bodies including but not limited to The Joint Commission (TJC), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI), American College of Radiology (ACR), Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS).
Provides training and education as appropriate to medical technology end users and clinical staff.
Provides mentoring and technical training to peers and development graded Biomedical Equipment Support Specialist.
May be tasked with leading and managing installation or upgrade projects for biomedical information systems, backup servers, other communication systems and other medical devices and systems. This includes but is not limited to pre-implementation planning and coordination with end users, vendors, and other onsite support staff (OIT, Informatics, SPS, etc.) for CIS, ARK, Imaging communication and other biomedical information system projects.
Represents Biomedical/Clinical Engineering department on committees and in meetings as delegated by supervisor.
Work Schedule: Full Time Monday- Friday 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. or 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
Citizenship. Citizen of the United States. After a determination is made that it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens, necessary personnel may be appointed on a temporary basis under authority of 38 U.S.C. 7405 without regard to the citizenship requirements of 38 U.S.C. 7402 or any other law prohibiting the employment of or payment of compensation to a person who is not a citizen of the United States. Candidates must meet all other requirements for the grade and position concerned.
Experience and Education. Associates degree in Biomedical Electronics Technology, Biomedical Equipment Technology or Biomedical Engineering Technology or in a related technical field such as Electronic Technology or Information Technology and two years of experience as a Biomedical Equipment Support Specialist, Biomedical Equipment Technician, Field Service Engineer, Medical Equipment Repairer, or Information Technology Specialist.
OR;
Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Engineering Technology or in a related field such as Electronics Engineering Technology (EET) or Information Technology.
OR;
Completion of a military training program in biomedical equipment and two years of experience as a Biomedical Equipment Support Specialist or Biomedical Equipment Technician, Field Service Engineer, Medical Equipment Repairer or Information Technology Specialist.
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).
Grade Determinations:
Experience. At least one year of experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level.
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs). In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate all of the following KSAs:
(a) Knowledge of VA, NFPA, FDA, NRC, The Joint Commission, and other relevant safety and radiation safety standards.
(b) Ability to lead biomedical staff and work on medical equipment if needed to maintain compliant workflow.
(c) Knowledge of project management principles required to effectively and efficiently manage multiple, concurrent projects.
(d) Skill in communication to interact with clinical, technical and managerial staff.
(e) Ability to instruct staff, lead individuals, manage priorities, and schedule work assignments.
Certification as a Certified Biomedical Equipment Technician (CBET), Certified Laboratory Equipment Specialist (CLES), Net+ and A+ are highly desirable at this level but not required.

Physical Requirements: The work requires some physical exertion, such as long periods of standing; recurring bending, crouching, stopping, stretching, climbing, or similar activities, especially to work on stationary equipment with components that may be difficult to access. It requires recurring lifting of light to moderately heavy items typically weighing over 50 pounds, such as medical and test equipment, patient monitors, tools, and components. You will be working in an environment containing asbestos.
