About the Position: This is a Temporary Not to Exceed 1 year Park Ranger position assisting the staff with the routine day-to-day duties required to operate and maintain the recreational facility to which employee is assigned.

Duties

Advise visitors concerning safety, fire prevention, and proper use of recreations facilities. Develop and conduct interpretive talks and guided tour programs. Inspect facilities and check for compliance with rules and regulations. Collect cash receipts (user fees) and deposits in a designated depository. Prepare displays for posting on project bulletin boards. Conduct on-foot and motorized patrols of project land and water ways. Investigate stream pollution due to logging, mining and manufacturing processes, etc. Meet with Governmental fish, wildlife and pollution abatement officials regarding problems or constructive programs. Participate in water safety programs. Utilize computers and software including Corps-developed software.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Must obtain and maintain a current Corps of Engineers motorboat operator's license including all requirements of the District Licensing Policy.
  • Must be able to perform all physical requirements of this position. Heavy Lifting Requirements (over 45 pounds). Pre-employment physical is required.
  • May work in inclement weather to perform duties including but not limited to boat/foot patrol, surveillance of project, various inspections, boundary marking, special events, and emergency situations.
  • May work alone performing duties including but not limited to contacting the public while enforcing Title 36 Code of Federal Regulations, using a vehicle for off road use, and performing dam gate operations for flood damage reduction.
  • May be required to work weekends, holidays and varying shifts.
  • This position utilizes computers and software including Corps-developed software.
  • Required to wear the appropriate uniform for this position. The NRM uniform shall be worn in accordance with EP 1130-2-550 Chapter 8.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid State motor vehicle operator's license prior to appointment. Utilizes motor vehicle to travel to work sites sometimes in remote locations throughout the project.
  • Required to sign a DA Form 5019-R, Condition of Employment for certain civilian positions identified as critical under the Drug Abuse Testing Program.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain citation authority. Incumbent must successfully complete the annual refresher training in order to maintain citation authority.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. GS-05 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service which includes technical, administrative, or scientific work, fish and wildlife management, recreation management, law enforcement, or other park-related work with specific examples such as park guide or tour leader; law enforcement or investigative work; archeological or historical preservation research work; forestry and/or fire management work in a park, recreation, or conservation area; or management, assistant, or program specialist work involving the development and implementation of policy related to protection, conservation, or management of park areas or similar operations. OR Education: Successful completion of a full four-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with twenty-four semester hours of related course work in natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentages of the requirements is at least 100%. TO compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12, then divide your semester hours of education by 60, then add the two percentages.
