This position is part of the Department of Energy, Office of Environmental Management - Richland Operations Office, Soil and Groundwater Division. As an INTERDISCIPLINARY General Engineer/Physical Scientist, you will provide professional engineering or physical science expertise and support to DOE programs, projects or initiatives.
Duties
As a General Engineer or Physical Scientist, you will:
Provides management, planning, development, implementation and oversight of Hanford groundwater and vadose zone activities within the operational emphasis on monitoring and remediation of groundwater.
Evaluates scientific and engineering programs/project needs and prepares documentation (i.e., budget, procurement, SOWs, etc.) to support those needs.
As an engineering or physical science expert, oversees technically complex DOE engineering projects or initiatives.
Develop innovative recommendations for advancing programs and/or methods; and implements significant projects representing an important segment of DOE's mission, operating programs and/or the sustainability of energy resources and the environment.
Principal contributor on team-based projects or coordinate a team project and provide technical oversight and direction; and prepare, present, and evaluate plans, designs, reports, and correspondence.

Qualifications
BASIC REQUIREMENT: You must meet one of the Basic Requirements and additionally, the Specialized Experience to qualify for these series. See the Education section for the Basic Requirements.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
For the GS-11 grade level: A qualified candidate's online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position is defined as meeting ALL of the following:
1. Providing support in the application of project management principles, methods, and techniques to ensure effective and efficient achievement of project goals and objectives; AND
2. Researching the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) and Resource, Conservation, and Recovery Act (RCRA) to support project managers in remedial decision-making processes; AND
3. Assisting in the review and analyses of program and assigned projects. OR
You have successfully completed 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in Engineering, Physical Sciences, Natural Resources and Conservation, Earth Sciences, Environmental Science or a similarly related major. OR
You have a combination of education and experience that together meets the requirements for this position.
For the GS-12 grade level: A qualified candidate's online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position is defined as meeting ALL of the following:
1. Applying project management principles, methods, and techniques to ensure effective and efficient achievement of project goals and objectives; AND
2. Collaborating and providing input on briefings to management to resolve issues affecting assigned programs; AND
3. Reviewing and analyzing program and project needs and communicates findings and recommendations.
For the GS-13 grade level: A qualified candidate's online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position is defined as meeting ALL of the following:
1. Monitoring project management and integration of the planning, design, and execution of multiple groundwater and vadose projects; AND
2. Collaborating with technical personnel to clarify project issues, identify concerns, and resolve conflicts; AND
3. Communicating issues and making recommendations affecting assigned programs to senior leadership.

Education
Basic Requirement for GS-0801 General Engineer:
A bachelor's degree from a school of engineering with at least one program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED
OR
A bachelor's degree from a school of engineering that included differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics. TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED
OR
Current registration as an Engineer Intern (EI), Engineer in Training (EIT), or licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) by any State, the District of Columbia, Guam, or Puerto Rico. DOCUMENTATION REQUIRED
OR
Successfully passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination or any other written test required for professional registration by an engineering licensure board in the various States, the District of Columbia, Guam, and Puerto Rico. DOCUMENTATION REQUIRED
OR
Successfully completed at least 60 semester hours of courses in the physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences and that included the courses specified in the basic requirements under response option B above. TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED
OR
A bachelor's degree in a related appropriate scientific field (e.g., engineering technology, physics, chemistry, architecture, computer science, mathematics, hydrology, or geology) and at least 1 year of professional engineering experience acquired under professional engineering supervision and guidance. TRANSCRIPTS AND DOCUMENTATION OF ENGINEERING EXPERIENCE UNDER PROFESSIONAL ENGINEERING SUPERVISION REQUIRED.
BASIC REQUIREMENT for GS-1301, Physical Scientist:
A bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in physical science, engineering, or mathematics which included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics. TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED
OR
A combination of education and experience which includes courses equivalent to one of the majors, as shown in A above, that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education. TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED
