About the Position: Serves as Health Technician (Refractive Surgery) with the Defense Health Agency (DHA), Small Market and Stand-Alone Organization (SSO), Military Treatment Facility (MTF), West Point, NY. This is a Direct Hire Solicitation

Duties

Perform postoperative refractions and diagnostic testing under the supervision of the optometrist or ophthalmologist. Obtain ocular history and general medical history, obtains allergies and drug sensitivities and records the data concisely and correctly into the medical record; initiates treatment and administers appropriate medications. Measure distance vision using appropriate system and equipment; determines the optical power of lenses using a lensometer. Perform refractometry to include manual and automated subjective refractions. Accurately determine the patient's glasses prescription and refraction prior to surgery. Perform such tasks as administering appropriate medication, changing dressings, and removing sutures. Administer pre-laser medication under the direction of the surgeon. Prepares consent forms under physician supervision. Perform ophthalmic photography including retinal angiography, specular endothelial photomicroscopy, stereo slit lamp photo biomicroscopy and cine operative microscope documentation. Perform in the preoperative evaluation of surgical patients, to include diagnostic tests used to evaluate patient's preoperative services. Provide intra-operative support to the surgeon as a scrub and surgical technician. Provide postoperative support by disposing of all contaminated supplies, ensuring instruments are sterilized, and stored appropriately for their next use.

  • This position has mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations unless otherwise exempted for medical or religious reasons (documentation of exemption must be provided upon hire).
  • This position requires the employee to obtain Hepatitis B Immunization unless exempted by a physician.
  • This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) subject to applicant testing and random drug testing for incumbents.
  • This position requires the incumbent to pass a pre-placement medical and annual medical surveillance exam in accordance with Occupational Health requirements.
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification is required.
  • Incumbent must be a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO). Certificate required.

Qualifications

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes assisting in the preliminary examination of diagnostic procedures by utilizing screening and technical ophthalmic procedures; preparing for and assisting in refractive surgery procedures; and preparing for and assisting in non-refractive ophthalmic surgery procedures. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06). OR Education: One full year of graduate education in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position such as Surgical Technology. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts). OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours or equivalent by 18. Add the two percentages. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
