Duties

This is a bargaining unit position. This position is represented by AFGE. Please note that as provided for in the AFGE/VA Master Agreement the FIRST area of consideration for this position will be permanent employees of the local facility in which this position is being filled, the SECOND area of consideration will be employees at other VA facilities, and the THIRD area of consideration will be all other eligibles. Duties include work involved in the maintenance, repair, and modification of heavy-duty vehicles and mobile equipment which have utility systems or special hydraulic, pneumatic, mechanical, electrical, or electronic systems, features, or controls designed for such purposes as construction, earth moving, loading, and comparable industrial or special applications. Assists in disassembling, repairing and assembling major systems, components, and operating mechanisms. Makes repairs by removing, adjusting or replacing parts and components. Assists mechanics in complete overhaul and repair of systems. Replaces sensors, water pumps, spark plugs brake shoes, mufflers, gaskets, hoses, and complete assemblies. Cleans and replaces filters, screens, battery cables, and engine components. Cleans, removes, adjusts, and replaces defective automotive parts and components. When not engaged in primary duties of this position, incumbent may perform Cemetery Caretaker duties in support of burial operations and/or grounds maintenance. Work schedule: May be required to work Monday through Friday to include occasional weekends. Due to the mission of the National Cemetery, the cemetery cannot be closed for more than 2 consecutive days at any given time. Additionally, when a Federal holiday falls on a Monday or Friday, staff may be required to work on that holiday or a Saturday. All staff is required to work Memorial Day each year. Staff will be required to work overtime, weekends and holidays when necessary to meet the needs of the cemetery. Occasionally staff may be called back to the facility to perform emergency overtime work. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 10/04/2023. Your background must demonstrate work involved in the maintenance and repair of the cemetery's heavy vehicles and mobile equipment used for burial operations and the upkeep of cemetery grounds. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Physical Requirements: Work in tiring or uncomfortable positions for long periods throughout the workday. Frequent standing, bending, reaching, stretching, climbing, stooping and crouching. Work on top of, under, and in tight compartments of vehicles is cramped or awkward positions. Perform strenuous work while standing, lying or sitting. Frequently lift and carry items, unassisted, weighing up to 50 pounds. Push, pull and position parts. Working Conditions: Work is performed inside and outdoors in all types of weather to include extreme heat, cold, snow, rain, wind, sun and humidity. Incumbent is subject to discomfort from working in unnatural positions for long periods in all types of weather elements. Must work under stress and strain in dust, dirt, mud, water and be exposed to foul odors and equipment noises. Incumbent is exposed to occupational injuries such as: cuts, scrapes, bruises, shock, and dust from sawing materials as well as other potential hazards working with machinery, saws, and electrical and/or test equipment while performing duties of this position. Selected applicants will be required to complete an online onboarding process.
