About the Position: You will function as a Maintenance Mechanic with the Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District, Detroit Project Office at Historic Fort Wayne, Detroit, MI. While performing a wide variety of Maintenance Mechanic duties involved in operations, maintenance and repair of facilities, equipment, structures, building, and grounds, which requires the use of various trade practices.
Duties
Operates and maintains all electrical components, panels, and circuitry for all major structures as well as associated office buildings, storage and shop facilities and marine vessels.
Maintains, repairs, alters and constructs exterior and interior surfaces and structures built of a variety of brick, block and stone.
Construct and repair a wide variety of roofing and structural items such as building frames, rafters, concrete forms, walls, staircases, roofing and guttering.
Operate and maintain equipment with small engines such as chain saws, weed whippers, lawn tractors and mowers.
Operate and maintain pneumatic and electric impact drills, grinders, chain saws, band saws, circular saws, hand drills, drill presses, reamers, and metal fabrication machines.
Troubleshoots, formulate solutions, and repair or replace water utility systems, such as sewer distribution, and restroom facilities.
Operates safely equipment such as pick-up trucks, dump trucks, skid steers, forklift, front end loaders, and motor vehicles pulling equipment trailers.
Safely, tow by trailer, launch, and operates small crafts (boats) of up to 26 ft in length.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Position is covered by the Drug Testing Program, initial and random testing will be required.
- Initial and annual physical exam will be required.
- Incumbent must have and be able to maintain a valid motor vehicle license.
- Incumbent must be able to obtain and maintain a CDL license.
- Incumbent must be able to obtain and maintain Corps of Engineers motorboat license, and any other licenses required to perform the duties of the position.
- Heavy physical lifting is required lifting with assistance 50-100 pounds.
- Position requires temporary duty travel (TDY) 25% of the duty time.
- Conditions of work can be under a variety of conditions and also under a variety of weather.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Maintenance Mechanic without more than normal supervision. I am often consulted by other employees or in difficult situation regarding the performance of the following duties. I perform a full range of maintenance and repairs to systems found in administrative, warehouses, and repair shops facilities to include structural, electrical, carpentry, roofing, and mechanical operating components. I operate heavy equipment to include forklifts, manlifts and skid steers to safely and accurately maneuver supplies and materials to accomplish repairs. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
Physical Effort: Incumbent must be able to perform all physical requirements of this position as identified in the position description. Duties include but are not limited to climbing ladders and steep stairways and working on steep and uneven ground. Incumbent must be capable of lifting at least 50 pounds unassisted or up to 100 lbs. with the assistance of one other person. Tasks requiring the ability to lift 50 pounds while working alone include but are not limited to lifting and carrying a five gallon can of kerosene, lifting and carrying a 5O pound bag of wildlife seed, lifting and carrying a 5 gallon can of paint, cleaning liquid or hydraulic oil. Tasks requiring the ability to lift up to 100 lbs. with the assistance of one other person include but are not limited to moving furniture and lifting 80 lb. bags of cement.
Working Conditions: Incumbent works in a variety of conditions. Work is completed on but not limited to scaffolding, high ladders or rooftops subject to dangers such as but not limited to falling, exposed to possibility of burns, cuts and bruises, broken bones or infections. Incumbent may work in inclement weather to perform duties including but not limited to surveillance of project, various inspections, boundary marking, special events, and emergency situations (respond to public accidents, drownings, etc.). Incumbent must be capable or working in conditions of dust, welding fumes, paint vapors and sandblast particles utilizing appropriate personal protective equipment for those conditions which may be heavy and uncomfortable.
