About the Position: Serves as an Animal Health Technician (Leader) at Andrews Branch Veterinary Treatment Facility, responsible for performing complicated technical procedures involving diagnostic imaging, surgery, medicine, critical or general care, or any combination of veterinary support work in support of the Veterinary Treatment Facility (VTF). All animal care medical duties are performed under the direction of a certified veterinarian.

Duties

Responsible for medical care of Military Working Dogs (MWDs) and Government Owned Animals (GOAs) assigned to and under the care of Andrews Branch Veterinary Treatment Facility. Leads the Veterinary Treatment Facility (VTF) technician personnel and oversees VTF schedule and logistics. Ensures the organization’s strategic plan, mission, vision, and values are communicated to the team, and is integrated into the team’s strategies, goals, objectives, work plans, and work products and services. Reports to the supervisor periodically on team and individual work accomplishments, problems, progress in mastering tasks and work processes, and individual and team training needs. Instructs new and junior personnel on techniques, standards, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and instructions. Oversees recurring tasks, ordering, maintenance, and facility integrity requirements as property custodian, facility manager, security custodian, and alternate Non-Appropriated Fund (NAF) government purchase card (GPC) holder. May be required to attend to after hours on call for emergency presentations.

Requirements

  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position requires a valid driver’s license to operate vehicles to drive to distant sites.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs and up to 75 lbs with assistance in the regular performance of duties.
  • This position may require working overtime after normal duty hours and/or on weekends and holidays.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Licensed Veterinary Technician, Certified Veterinary Technician, Registered Veterinary Technician or equivalent Licensure.
  • Must remain current on all Department of Defense (DoD), Army, and MRC-E wide yearly training requirements.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes provides veterinary technical support to the veterinarians and other clinical personnel (which may include examining, identifying, collecting specimens, vaccination, evaluation and disposing of animals); maintains the medical and radiographic records; AND provides office automation support. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-08). OR Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: Animal Science. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages.
