About the Position: This position is located in the Mental Health Department, Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, Virginia.

Duties

Type, edit, format, print and maintain electronic files for a wide variety of documents for office and provider staff. Maintain outpatient records for clinic use following appropriate Command Directives and Instructions. Ensure records are in correct format and documentation is placed in file correctly. Answer incoming telephone calls and greets patients, families and commands to the Mental Health Directorate. Provide callers and visitors with routine information regarding the clinic.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Work deals with one of the most sensitive areas of medicine and total confidentiality is necessary. All staff is responsible for reading and signing the Mental Health Code of Ethics
  • A favorable Tier 3 background investigation is required for all Non-Critical Sensitive (NCS) positions with access to network systems and Personally Identifiable Information (PII).

General experience is progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position to be filled, such as, creating a variety of documents and correspondence, maintaining files and suspense logs, utilizing office automation systems and equipment. OR Education: Two years of education above the high school level obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 6. Then divide your semester hours of education by 30. Add the two percentages. Proficiency Required:This position requires a qualified typist. A qualified typist can type 40 words per minute based on a 5 minute sample with three or fewer errors. You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Computer SkillsCustomer Service (Clerical/Technical)Manages and Organizes Information Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-02).
