The primary purpose of this position is to provide assistance to the Natural Resource Manager and professional staff in executing plans and to perform work in the support of resource protection and forestry, wildlife and fisheries management.
Duties
Collects and organizes a variety of administrative and technical data useful to natural resource managers in preparing annual reports and work plans.
Collects data on forest health and the condition of forage, streams, lakes and ponds; makes preliminary determinations on causes of problems noted such as drought, overpopulation, required feeding plots.
Completes a variety of work in support of the base forestry program.
Provides information to military/civilian personnel, contractors, lessees and the general public regarding specific services provided through the natural resources programs.
Performs emergency duties related to natural resource functions such as fire suppression, nuisance animal complaints and mission and natural disasters.

- Work occasionally requires travel away from the normal duty station by military or commercial air transportation.
- May be required to perform temporary duty travel for conferences or training.
- Must be familiar with firefighting procedures and be able to operate fire fighting equipment safely and effectively.
- Subject to call on a 24-hour basis in response to high priority oil/gas compliance concerns, nuisance animal complaints weather emergencies.

Qualifications
In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Group Coverage Qualification Standard for Technical and Medical Support Positions
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-06, or equivalent in other pay systems. Examples of specialized experience includes researching activity or control program work; nursery work that required the growing and maintenance of plants in a controlled environment; working in comparable to that with a large dairy farm where production records, animal environment, and sanitary conditions were kept in accordance with modern dairy practice.
Farming experience that was not performed in a controlled environment, or experience as a laborer who was not responsible for planning and scheduling his/her own work, but only performed assigned tasks, would not qualify as specialized experience.

COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100 percent. To combine education and experience, determine the total qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level. Then determine the education as a percentage of the education required for the grade level. Finally, add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify an applicant for that grade level. NOTE: YOU MUST SUBMIT A COPY OF YOUR TRANSCRIPT.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
1. Knowledge of applied forestry and wildlife concepts and principles relative to forest resource survey, inventory, and enhancement of wildlife habitat areas.
2. Knowledge of state and Federal wildlife laws and permit regulations.
3. Knowledge of the fundamental of fires, the effect of weather and other factors needed to prevent or control fires.
4. Knowledge of reforestation and habitat restoration concepts and various forest types related to topography and growth characteristics for wetlands, bottomland and upland forest areas.
5. Skill in using measuring instruments such as increment borer, diameter tape, prism, clinometers, compass and chain to accomplish accurate readings and measurements.
6. Ability to use aerial photographs and reference maps related to physical and resource factors to determine timber road routes, boundaries for silvicultural activities, habitat enhancement, recreational and hunting areas, oil and gas production sites, pest control and other operations.
PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
