Duties

This is an excepted service position that requires membership in a compatible military assignment in the DC Air National Guard. MILITARY REQUIREMENTS: You must meet the minimum military rank as specified in this announcement. Compatible military grade and assignment required prior to the effective date of placement The National Guard's full-time support program requires that all military technicians are members of the National Guard and are appointed to full-time positions which correspond to their military assignments. Applicants who are not currently a member of the National Guard must be eligible for immediate membership. Minimum Military Rank: E-7/ MSgt Maximum Military Rank: E-8/SMSgt Other requirements: For positions requiring the operation of motor vehicles, candidates must have a valid state driver's license for the state in which they live or are principally employed. For positions requiring a security clearance (Secret or Top Secret) the applicant must possess or be able to obtain a clearance within One (1) year of appointment. This position is located within the Safety Office at the Air National Guard unit. The primary purpose of this position is to: perform work in a broad range of weapons safety program elements, such as inspections/surveys, evaluations, mishap investigations, and safety training. Duties: Performs a broad range of safety duties in one or more areas of the weapons/explosives safety program. Advises supervisors and/or safety representatives on appropriate measures to eliminate or control hazardous operating procedures. Develops specialized operating practices modifying or departing significantly from standard techniques when necessary, based on interpretation of policies, standards, and regulations applicable to weapons/explosive safety. Evaluates aircraft and vehicle maintenance facilities and shops, administrative areas, supply and warehousing, construction sites, etc. Evaluates a variety of complex, unconventional weapons and explosives safety problems or circumstances; ensures correct safety and protective equipment is available in use. Complies and analyzes mishap data, identifies trends, provides manager with mishap/trend analysis data and assists in developing programs to reduce mishaps.

  • May be required to wear special protective clothing such as coats, boots, vests, gas masks, and/or helmets and may be exposed to high levels of noise such as aircraft engines.
  • May be required to travel in military and/or commercial aircraft to perform temporary duty assignments.

GENERAL EXPERIENCE: All GS-0017 series personnel must be certified at the next higher level before being eligible for that level and must have a minimum of one year on-the-job experience in the grade immediately below the next higher level. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENE: Experience performing inspections and evaluating compliance within applicable regulations. Participated in testing munitions and safety criteria. Preparing manuals for aircraft weapons safety and training.

Education

For entry into this specialty, completion of high school or general educational development equivalency is mandatory. Combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements for the grade levels specified. For example, successful completion of a full four-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in any combination of subjects such as safety, fire prevention, industrial hygiene, or other directly related subjects is considered qualifying for the GS-05 level.
