About the Position: The purpose of this position is to classify, rate, route, and effect shipment of cargo. The work requires knowledge of transportation regulations, methods, and techniques, as well as a wide variety of freight.
Duties
Classifies, routes, and rates domestic and export shipments of hazardous and general supplies and Chemical Defense Equipment (CDE) and conventional ammunition via all modes of transportation.
Performs classification, routing, and rating of shipments using National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) and Uniform Freight Classification (UFC) Guides.
Monitors and evaluates carriers' performance for refusing to pick up shipments.
Operates the ETA-CFM and Power-track systems.
Selects most economical and advantageous rates, routes, and modes in order to meet port requirements or consumer needs.
Uses sound traffic management judgment in consolidating ammunition shipments of compatible items.
Maintains a close working relationship with Ammunition Operations, Engineer and Planning and Ammunition Surveillance personnel.
Maintains records of detention and demurrage charges to assure that bills submitted are paid timely and accurately.
Requirements
- May be required, if qualified, to participate in Chemical accident/Incident Response and Assistant (CAIRA) situations and serve on teams dedicated to controlling CAIRA situations after being trained for particular duty involved.
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation. Incumbent must be able to obtain and maintain a SECRET security clearance.
- Required to successfully complete an initial 80-hour hazardous material certification course, Ammo-62 Technical Transportation of Hazardous Materials, and recertification course every two years.
- Up to 5% business travel required.

Specialized ExperienceGS-08: One year of specialized experience which includes: Assisting with classifying and routing shipments using established regulations and guidelines; Computing rates and routes for domestic shipments; Assisting with computing rates for international shipments; Maintaining records of charges for shipments. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).
Specialized Experience GS-09: One year of specialized experience which includes: Classifying and routing shipments using established regulations and guidelines; Computing rates and routes for domestic and international shipments; Creating and maintaining records of charges for shipments. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-08).
