This position serves as an Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic within the VA Western Colorado Health Care System in Grand Junction, CO. The Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic is responsible for installing, troubleshooting, performing preventative maintenance and repairing all HVAC&R (heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigeration) equipment and controls.
Duties
DIRECT HIRE AUTHORITY: This position is being filled using Direct-Hire Authority (5 CFR 337.201) for this occupation.
Your duties can include but are not limited to the following:
Repairing, troubleshooting, maintaining and installing air conditioning equipment in the hospital and ancillary buildings;- Installing, troubleshooting, repairing and maintaining refrigerators, freezers and ice machines, including those utilized for patient food and drugs, laboratory specimens and blood products;
Operating and repairing all aspects of the environmental control system to include adding and removing points in the system, building graphics, modifying and troubleshooting programing, repairing and replacing sensors, actuators and other control devices, and repairing and replacing LAN devices such as terminal equipment controllers; and
Troubleshooting, diagnosing and making repairs to a large variety of equipment and systems that provide a variety of air-conditioning functions, such as heating, cooling, humidification, dehumidification and air cleaning, filtering and circulating.
Performs maintenance repairs and preventive maintenance inspections at a journeyman level on equipment which includes roof-mounted package air conditioning units, auxiliary equipment for walk-in coolers, deep freeze units, chilled water circulating systems, blood bank refrigerators, ice machines, domestic refrigerators, morgue coolers, window air conditioners, refrigerated drinking fountains, evaporative coolers, air compressors, exhaust systems, pneumatic control systems and digital control systems.
Performs tasks requiring a basic knowledge of and skill in allied trades to include insulating, pipe fitting, sheet metal mechanics, and welding
uses the building automation system (BAS) i.e., Johnson Controls Metasys software, to trouble shoot air conditioning system problems and to maintain and adJust air cond1t1omng systems in order to provide acceptable environmental temperatures.

Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 3:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.

Physical Requirements: May be required to bend, reach and hold awkward positions for prolonged periods. Frequently works from ladders, platforms, high places and cramped spaces. Considerable climbing, walking and stooping is also required for this position. Frequently lifts and moves objects up to 50lbs., and occasionally lifts and carries objects over 50lbs. either alone or with others.
Works indoors and outdoors, in all weather conditions, and is exposed to the usual occupational hazards. Required to work in close, extremely hot or cold places and around high voltage electricity. Must work in noisy, dusty and humid places.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements:
Preferred experience: Commercial HVAC and Refrigeration systems at a journeyman level. Experience with Johnson Controls and Trane Building Automation Systems.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
