Duties
Will serve as an animal health technician for the Department of Clinical Investigation, Madigan Army Medical Center.
Work in soft tissue and orthopedic surgery rooms maintaining sterile work conditions .
Monitor sterile procedures by the surgical assistants and the surgery team.
Prepare various surgical instruments and equipment for use and assist the surgeon as directed.
Assure proper cleaning, preparation and set-up of surgical suites for the surgeries of the day and each evening in anticipation of an emergency.
Review medical records prior to anesthesia to determine the necessary medical requirement for periodic physical examinations, radiology and required laboratory procedures.

- This position is a Testing Designated Position subject to pre-employment screening and random drug testing
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
- Due to the nature of this position, employees are required to work both planned and unscheduled overtime.
- This position is subject to screening and update of required immunizations unless exempted for medical or administrative reasons.
- Due to the nature of this position, employees may be required to work weekends.
- This position has been designated "Weather Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions, the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
- This position requires the incumbent to obtain Assistant laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT), Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT), and Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) Certification within their first 2 years of employment.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes applying federal laws and regulations governing the care of animals to include transcribing data into medical records; assisting the surgeon during surgical procedures in order to obtain and interpret physiologic data, (heart sounds, lung sounds, electrical activity of the heart, blood pressure, carbon dioxide content of expired gas, etc.), preparing surgical rooms, clean and sterilize surgical instruments and equipment. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).

Education: One and a half years of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Zoology, Biology, chemistry, agricultural, Animal Health Tech School, or Veterinary Tech School of study. .

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total semester hours minus 18) by 9. Add the two percentages.
