Incumbent is a staff Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (DRT) (MR) at the Battle Creek VA Medical Center. This specialty modality Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MR) requires additional knowledge of superconducting magnets, the physics of superconducting magnets, and how they relate to the human anatomy in medical imaging. The purpose of these exams is to achieve diagnostic studies so that proper diagnoses and treatment may be effectuated. This is an intermittent position, not to exceed 1 year.

Duties

Major duties include, but are not limited to: Perform above a full performance level at least 25% of the time, with higher-level duties consisting of significant scope, complexity, and range of variety. Provide services in specialized areas of radiologic technology. Know MRI scanning parameters, anatomy and positioning, patient safety procedures, and ability to learn basic computer functions. Perform a broad range of MRI/MRA procedures using standard protocols and techniques. Maintain and make minor adjustments to equipment for optimal functioning. Identify malfunctioning equipment and report equipment failures to the appropriate departments. Maintain cleanliness in the assigned work area. Follow Medical Center infection control policies. Maintain and stock necessary supplies in work area. Prepare room and equipment needed for exams. Observe patient during procedure and report complications or unusual events to the supervisor. Adhere to practices and regulations governing safety and security in the workplace. Comply with published safety policies and procedures. Promote a culture of safety and willfully cooperate in efforts to improve safety and eradicate potential events. Properly identify and the patient and all images. Provide education to patients and others regarding imaging procedures. Perform computer work and complete required forms associated with patient exams. Organize work and set priorities to meet deadlines. Provide clinical instruction to new employees and students. Learn new advancements in procedures, protocols, and equipment. Keep up to date on learning services trainings (TMS). Accept duties/assignments outside of normal workstation as needed. Maintain knowledge of PACS. Work Schedule: Intermittent: Intermittent employment is defined as non-fulltime employment in which employees serve under an excepted or competitive service appointment without a regularly scheduled tour of duty. A position with an intermittent work schedule is sporadic and unpredictable so that a tour of duty cannot be regularly scheduled in advance. Qualifications

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Certification. All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Education. Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from [other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE).] Credentialing Standards: Public Law 97-35, the Consumer-Patient Radiation Health and Safety Act of 1981, requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 5, Standards for the Accreditation of Educational Programs and the Credentialing of Radiographic Personnel. Essentially, they must have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in that regulation and is accredited by an organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and be certified as radiographers in their field. English Language Proficiency. DRTs must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and7407(d). May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements for employment, the following criteria must be used when determining the appropriate grade assignment of candidates: Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist, GS-9 : Experience or Education. At least 1 year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level. Assignments. For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety, and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time. This specialty modality Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MR) requires additional knowledge of superconducting magnets, the physics of superconducting magnets, and how they relate to the human anatomy in medical imaging. The technologist must be educated in the safety factors governing a magnetic environment that patients, visitors, and equipment enter. The practitioner must have specialized knowledge of cross sectional anatomy and how it relates to the soft tissues and vessels of the human body. The technologist must also have specialized knowledge in the radio-frequency surface coils required for each specific anatomical area to be imaged. [This assignment may also perform basic magnetic resonance safety program duties. Technologists must be knowledgeable in contrast media, power injectors, and PACS. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate ALL the following KSAs:(1) Ability to balance the needs of patients and staff while still performing complex scans and procedures. (2)Knowledge of techniques for gathering relevant information from the medical record, significant others, and health care providers. (3) Ability to assess factors that may contraindicate the procedure. (4) Knowledge of basic first aid and basic life support practices related to radiography. (5) Knowledge of physical assessment, aseptic techniques, intravenous methods and techniques and universal precautions. Physical Requirements: The individual must have the physical ability to perform job-related duties which require heavy lifting, 45 pounds and over, standing up to 6 hours, wearing PPE (Lead Apron) up to 6 hours, bending, transferring. stooping, stretching, walking, pushing, or pulling without assistance from another patient care provider or significant other.
