The incumbent will be organizationally assigned to the VISN 10 Prosthetics Program Office, VISN 10/12 Optical Fabrication Laboratory (VISN 10 OFL). The purpose of this position is to serve as a Prescription Eyeglass Maker/Shepherd for the VISN 10 OFL, which fabricates eyeglasses for the care sites of VISN 10 and VISN 12. This individual will maintain the day-to-day operations of the optical lab equipment.
Duties
Duties not limited to:
The Prescription Eyeglass Maker will be responsible for the fabrication of eyeglass using state-of-the-art Optical Lab equipment along with appropriate optical supplies/goods. Duties include, but are not limited to:
Maintaining all quality control procedures set for the Network Optical Lab Manager and/or Lab Supervisor.
Produce quality eyewear in a timely manner for patients, employees and enhanced sharing opportunities.
Act as the liaison between the Optical Lab and other medical centers within the VISN, as well as enhanced sharing personnel.
Provide services/production for prosthetic items within the VISN, as well as potential negotiated agreements with the medical centers outside the VISN.
Maintain inventory control of all materials needed in the fabrication of lenses.
Fix, repair, and/or adjust eyewear for patients, clinics, and/or dispensing sites.
Troubleshoot optical difficulties concern eyewear with patients, clinics, and/or dispensing sites.
Perform preventive maintenance on all Optical Lab equipment and tools in order them in proper operating condition.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:30a.m.-4:00p.m.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: This type of work is physically demanding. The incumbent performs tasks normally requiring moderate physical exertion, including occasionally lifting of up to 50 pounds. Work includes periods of standing for extended periods on concrete floors, stooping,
crouching, bending, pushing, pulling, carrying, reaching, and walking for up to twelve (12) hours in each day. Heavy lifting (over 50 pounds) and strenuous exertion is occasionally necessary. The incumbent is standing or walking most of the time. The individual must be able to work for sustained periods of time. The individual must be able to operate multiple pieces of equipment at any given time. The position requires excellent manual dexterity and hand, eye, foot coordination is essential. Incumbent must have the ability to maintain a high degree of mental alertness and concentration.
