The incumbent serves as an Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic and is assigned to the Maintenance and Repair Section at the St. Alban's, Brooklyn and Manhattan VHA and will install, maintain and repair equipment, used in refrigeration and air conditioning systems, including humidifying equipment and high volume air exhaust, and supply systems in the station and district, laundry, buildings and grounds.

Duties

This position maintains and repairs, modifies, troubleshoots, installs and operates all heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration systems for the St. Alban's VA. This includes all air handling units, air conditioning compressors, chill water pumps, condensing water pumps, heating water pumps, cooling towers, ice machines, heat convertors, fume hoods, variable frequency drives, and associated pneumatic and electric control systems. Major Duties include but are not limited to: The work involves installing, recognizing the cause of faulty equipment, and making repairs on a variety of domestic and commercial refrigeration and air conditioning units and systems such as walk-in and reach-in coolers, refrigerators, ice cream cabinets, deep freezers, attic and evaporative fans, and other equipment of comparable complexity including large systems for heating, cooling, humidifying and dehumidifying. Installs and repairs systems to condition the air for different kinds of structures including those areas that have special requirements such as communication centers, data processing centers, operating rooms, laboratories, intensive care units and other areas with sensitive equipment. The systems use a variety of methods of air conditioning and refrigeration such as mechanical compression, vapor compression, absorption and multiple compressor systems. Performs all mechanical and electrical work required to maintain, repair, service and recognize the cause of faulty equipment relating to refrigeration and air handling equipment. Candidates may be eligible for a lump sum CSI for a pro-rated amount if onboard prior to the CSI expiration date. Eligible candidates will be required to sign a service agreement agreeing to an obligated service period and failure to complete the obligated service period may result in a debt for the unearned portion of the CSI.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. Physical Effort: The employee uses considerable physical effort in the operation and maintenance of facilities, equipment, and attachments. The employee frequently is required to perform heavy lifting and exerts considerable physical effort while using hand and power tools. Work requires extensive leg, arm, and hand movement, standing, stooping, walking, bending, climbing, and kneeling, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. The employee frequently lifts, carries, and sets up parts and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds unassisted, and over 50 pounds with assistance. The employee uses jacks, pulleys, dollies, or other lifting and carrying devices. Work may be from ladders, scaffolding, platforms, or high places, and in hard-to-reach places. Frequent arm and leg movements are required to operate controls, make repairs, and build items. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
