The incumbent is employed as a journeyman Maintenance Mechanic at the two division Veterans Administration Medical Center in Lexington, Kentucky. This position encompasses application of basic skills and technical practices from various maintenance trades to include carpentry, facility maintenance, painting, masonry, wallpaper/vinyl hanging, heavy equipment operation, and sign fabrication using computer software.

Duties

Major duties include: Performs carpentry alterations, erection of partitions using wood and metal studs, furring out walls, hanging drywall, hang doors, repair and constructs window screens, screen doors and storm windows and doors, build forms for concrete. Installs and repairs all types of floor coverings such as asphalt and vinyl tile, wood floors and carpeting. Install and repair all types of roofing and guttering and install various types of ceiling tile and track including fiberglass soundproof ceiling tile. Assemble and install shelving, both wood and metal, repair furniture and keep in repair all fixed and moveable cabinets. Install and build modular furniture, to include wall mounted and free standing furniture. Repair and install window shades, Venetian blinds and curtain rods and assist air conditioning mechanic in installing window air conditioners and exhaust fans. Use power tools such as radial saws, band saws, electric hand saws, sanders, drywall sanders, grinders, floor tile removal machines and assists in keeping all tools used in his section in good repair and working condition. Clean out bad plaster, prepare surface and repair utilizing scratch and finish coasts. Knows proper mixtures to use for plaster so that it will match the existing plaster in texture, quality and workmanship. Utilizes plaster and fireproofing agents in constructing continuous smoke and fire barrier partitions as required by NFPA. Repair work and new installation of ceramic tile and quarry tile in their various shapes and patterns. Utilizes a variety of masonry products and techniques including concrete, concrete blocks, brick, clay tile, ceramic tile, terrazzo and terra cotta in constructing and maintaining horizontal and vertical structures within the Medical Center, at times in accordance with stringent NFPA requirements. Hanging all types of residential and commercial grades of wallpaper. Paints the interior and exterior of approximately 46 buildings ranging in height from one to eight stories. Operates various heavy equipment. Other duties as assigned. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Incumbent is required to work on platforms, ladders, aerial lifts, roofs, and gutters and is required to climb onto these structures carrying and lifting materials, tools and equipment. Work involves standing, bending, sitting, squatting, and kneeling for long periods of time in a cramped position. May be required to crawl into tight places or climb to heights as much as 100 feet from the ground and then perform duties at this height. Physical effort requires hand sawing, nailing and lifting large articles or assemblies. Work is carried on both inside and outside in fair weather and foul, in ventilated and unventilated areas, and subject to cuts and bruises during the erection of the wooden framework of buildings and structures; also danger of falling down from platforms, ladders, and roofs. While removing awnings and screens, subject to wasp and hornet stings while working on ladders and other platforms. The most prevalent source of accidents in their work is in the use of power saws and planers that can easily cause hand and eye injuries.
