The primary purpose is to serve as the senior closed microphone reporter, responsible for difficult cases and the training and work review of less experienced reporters. Records and transcribes high speed, verbatim dictation, involving specialized terminology, using a closed microphone or similar mechanical equipment, to support statutory or regulatory proceedings requiring a transcript of proceedings.

Duties

Receive and transmit electronic messages and documents. Prepare complete index of the record including all exhibits, testimony of each witness, pleas, findings of court, sentence, motion and challenges. Research technical dictionaries, texts, unpublished research, or material in legal libraries to locate supplemental material to complete the record of trial or to ensure the accuracy of terms. Record high speed dictation at formal and informal legal proceedings, such as courts-martial, grievance hearings, and investigation boards. Train paralegal court reporters to record legal, administrative, and proceedings.

  • May be required to work other than normal duty hours, which includes overtime, nights, holidays or weekend hours as workload demands.
  • Work will require travel away from the normal duty station on military or commercial aircraft, or by automobile.
  • Five years or more of court reporting experience is highly desired.
  • This ANNOUNCEMENT is for multiple locations. Salary will be adjusted with locality depending on location.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Group Standard for Clerical and Administrative Support Positions SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-08 grade level in the Federal service or equivalent in other pay systems. Specialized experience is experience performing recording and transcribing of material spoken at conferences, hearings, or similar proceedings when the recording duties require the ability to operate closed microphone or similar mechanical equipment to reproduce the spoken material on a disk, cylinder, or similar device. AND You must be a qualified typist of at least 40 words per minute and you must be able to take dictation at the speed of no less than 175 words per minute. Knowledge of an extensive body of rules, procedures, formats, protocols and specialized terminology as they relate to formal legal proceedings, to prepare, process, and disseminate legal forms and documents. 2. Knowledge of correct grammar, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and format to be able to accurately prepare and edit written correspondence and reports. 3. Knowledge of word processing automation software functions to support office operations and produce a variety of textual documents, such as legal proceedings, letters, reports, memos, and form letters. 4. Skill to operate closed microphone equipment, or similar mechanical equipment, sufficient to take dictation to reproduce material on a disk, cylinder, or similar device. 5. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing and to provide training and guidance to others. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
