These positions are temporary and may not exceed 1039 hours (six months) in a service year. They may be terminated sooner or extended depending on management needs. Duties

The employment periods are listed below but may vary during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Denali National Park and Preserve (DENA) - Denali Park, Alaska - Anticipated employment period is May to September. Lake Clark National Park and Preserve (LACL) - Port Alsworth, Alaska - Anticipated employment period is May to October. Duties for the position with Denali National Park and Preserve include but are not limited to the following: Assists with the collection and compilation of data necessary for implementing the adaptive management component of the 2012 Denali Park Road Vehicle Management Plan (VMP). Duties include: Collect data using hand-held Juno GPS units while traveling in a concessioner-operated buses or a government vehicle transiting all or part of the 92-mile Denali Park Road. Collect data on wildlife sightings using binoculars and a range finder. Collect data on VMP indicators (number and type of vehicles at a wildlife stop and rest stops, amount of time hikers have been waiting to be picked up by a bus). Collect vehicle traffic data from monitoring locations. Install and maintain traffic counters, download and process data using specialized software. Download and process data using MS Excel, MS Access, and ArcMap. Perform quality control/quality assurance and follow established protocols. Maintain monitoring equipment. Follow assigned monitoring schedule. Communicate changes in schedule to supervisor or crew lead in a timely manner in writing and orally. Interface with concessioner staff and park visitors. Conduct Dall sheep surveys. Travel by foot. Use binoculars, range finder, and spotting scope. Navigate to survey locations using map, compass, and GPS. Work hours will vary and will include early-mornings and late-evenings, weekends, nights, and holidays. Sheep surveys will involve hiking in wilderness. Close encounters with grizzly bears, moose, and wolves are possible at work and living locations. The incumbent may be required to drive a government vehicle. A uniform will not be required while traveling on buses but will be required when traveling in a government vehicle. Safety training will include living and working in grizzly bear, moose, and wolf habitat and traveling in remote wilderness locations. Incumbent must follow safety protocols and regulations. Duties for the position with Lake Clark National Park and Preserve include but are not limited to the following: Use fish capture techniques such as seines, hoop nets, and/or gill nets. Count salmon from a raised platform or weir. Operate small (18 - 23 feet) boats on lakes and/or rivers. Use radio telemetry to track fish or wildlife movements. Maintain a field camp and Work in remote areas under adverse weather conditions. Use ESRI ArcMap, ArcGIS, or comparable mapping software to organize and process field data. Use Global Positioning Systems (GPS) unit to map points, lines, and areas. Use Microsoft Access or other comparable spreadsheet/database to enter and manage data. Physical Demands: The work requires physical exertion such as regular and recurring walking, hiking, or climbing over wet, rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces; bending; crouching, stooping, lifting or reaching to observe, collect, or record field data. Heavy items (e.g., equipment and packs up to 50 pounds) must be lifted and carried on a routine basis. Working Conditions: The work is performed in an office and in the field. Field work involves regular and recurring exposure to extreme weather conditions and terrain, poisonous plants, biting insects, and wild animals.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-09/29/2023-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time number of hours worked. If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience. To qualify for this position at the GS-04 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following basic experience and/or education requirements by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: You must have at least six months of general experience, and six months of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-3 level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors), for a total of one year of experience. General Experience is (1) any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position, or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation such as assisting in the preparation of reports, utilizing computer programs to store and retrieve data, and providing information to others. Specialized Experience is experience such as working in a nursery that required the growing and maintenance of plants in a controlled environment; working in an environment comparable to a large farm where production records, animal environment, and sanitary conditions were kept in accordance with modern industry practice; taking and recording scientific measures; or assisting with research activities or field investigations related to the biological sciences. (Excess Specialized Experience can substitute for General Experience; but excess General Experience cannot be substituted for required Specialized Experience). (You must include hours per week worked on your resume.) -OR- EDUCATION: You must have successfully completed at least two years of education above high school (60 semester hour or 90 quarter hours) which included at least 12 semester hours in any combination of scientific or technical courses such as in biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics; at least 6 semester hours must be directly related to the position. (You must include a copy of your transcripts.) -OR- Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. To combine education and experience, first take the number of semester hours, and divide by 60. Take the number of months of full-time experience and divide by 12. Add the two percentages. The total must equal at least 100 percent. For example: I have 6 months of the general experience described above (50% of the experience requirement), plus 30 semester hours of undergraduate level work (50% of the education requirement) - which includes: at least 6 semester hours (50% of the courses as described above); of which, at least 3 semester hours of study must be directly related to the position (50% of the directly related study as described above). Volunteer experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social).
