Job opening: Museum Technician (General)

Salary: $46 815 - 67 628 per year

You will serve as a Museum Technician (General) of GREAT LAKES NAVAL MUSEUM.

Duties

You will assist with the organization and execution of routine museum education, public programs, special events, and volunteer events at the museum. You will research, design, develop, and implement routine educational programs. You will assist with the execution of the museum's volunteer program as well as its communication program. You will conduct historical research for museum exhibits and plan standalone programs that are based on artifacts and archival materials in the collection. You will present tours of the museum galleries and conduct formal lectures individually designed for audiences. You will assist with planning and coordinating activities for children and other group visits. You will inventory and catalog items in the museum's education collection, track their usage, manage associated record-keeping, and monitor the object's condition.

Qualifications

GS-7: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-06) or pay band in the federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector demonstrating the following duties: 1) Producing and conducting some of the following: routine gallery demonstrations on historical topics, museum classes, tours, museum school programs, workshops, museum teacher and docent training, and hands-on activities in a museum setting; 2) Presenting tours of the museum galleries and conducting formal lectures on historical topics for museum visitors individually designed for audience educational level and interest; 3) Assisting with the management and coordination of day-to-day activities of the museum volunteer program and museum special events programs; 4) Conducting background historical research and aiding the creation and design of individual courses, lectures, school lesson plans, and teacher workshops; and 5) Planning, coordinating, and presenting onsite and offsite museum educational programming on historical topics for students for primary and secondary students from public and private schools; and 6) Inventorying and tracking the museum's hands-on educational collection of artifact and archival materials. GS-6: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-05) or pay band in the federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector demonstrating the following duties: 1) Providing support to museum staff with museum education program origination and development according to standards established by the American Alliance of Museums; 2) Assisting with maintaining an electronic calendar of daily museum events by receiving and compiling submissions from staff members; 3) Providing support with implementing an effective program of incentive awards and recognition to promote the retention of museum volunteers and ensuring sufficient volunteer staff is available to assist in mission accomplishment; and 4) Preparing and maintaining large databases of mailing recipients who receive information about museum events. Education

GS-06 & GS-07:In lieu of specialized experience, you may qualify with the following education or combination of both education and experience:

Successfully completed one full year of related graduate level education including art, history, museum studies, scientific subjects, or other courses related to the position to be filled.
OR
Successfully completed a bachelor's degree with superior academic achievement in a related field of study including art, history, museum studies, scientific subjects, or other courses related to the position to be filled.
OR
A combination of experience and education as described above that equates to one year of experience. My percentage of the required education plus my percentage of the required experience equal one hundred percent.
