This position is located at the Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital, Hines, IL (578) - a Level 1a Complexity VHA Facility.
Duties
The incumbent aids patients in the Ophthalmology Clinic environment through supportive activities such astransporting patient to/from waiting areas to clinic, to examinations and appointments, and aids in makingthe patient environment organized and efficient. The incumbent aids patients who are confused ordisoriented by accompanying them until turned over to a risk-free environment. The incumbent may alsobe assigned as a patient sitter, one to one, as well as assisting patients in the rest room on an as needed basis. Reports all pertinent information to a Clinical Staff member when patient is transferred.The incumbent is responsible for:
Patient transport between the between the main eye clinic (A153) and the eye diagnostic center (C127) as needed.
Checking in with Clinical Staff member on assigned Ophthalmology Clinic to receive work assignments based on patient examinations in accordance with established procedures and schedules; provides patients with special requests as needed.
Aiding Ophthalmology Technicians and Residents with triaging patients and non-clinical activity related to fluorescein angiograms, setting up injections and minor procedures performed by Clinical Staff.
Picking up and delivering laboratory specimens, specimen containers and blood or blood products for transfusion.
Picking up and delivering equipment, training materials, medical-records, surgical schedules, prescriptions, consults, and requests.
Adhering to safety procedures of the Ophthalmology Clinic including infection control, transport of biohazards and monitoring oxygen, I.V.'s and catheter lines during transport.
Restocking all personal protection equipment cabinets at least twice daily or as needed to maintain proper stock levels.
Aiding Clinical Staff including cleaning clinic areas according to established procedures among other tasks.
Maintaining the patient's safety while proving close supervision of the high fall risk patient. Assisting in Transferring patient to the exam chair
Performs other related duties as assigned.

General Experience: You must have six (6) months general experience (any type of work that demonstrates the ability to perform the work or experience that provided familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the position). Examples of related general experience include (but are not limited to): direct patient care activities; ability to observe, perceive, use judgment, show initiative, and pay attention to detail; ability to take and record vital signs and other information; ability to politely and courteously provide customer service and relay information; and basic knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, effect of illness on individuals. OR,
Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have completed one-year above high school with courses that included study in medical, health, or related fields. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. Education cannot be credited without documentation. Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an combination of experience and education post-high school. Physical Requirements: The work requires long periods of standing, with minor bending, lifting and pushing.
