The employee serves as a Pest Control Worker and will be assigned to the Environmental Management Service (EMS), VA Northern Indiana Health Care System (VANIHCS), located in Fort Wayne, IN.
Duties
The Pest Control Worker is responsible for planning, implementing, and carrying out a complete and comprehensive integrated pest management program for the Medical Center and outlying clinics as required, and will be the back-up to the Marion pest controller. This includes performance of interior and exterior pest control measures in all areas as needed.
This position involves a multi-grade career ladder. The major duties listed below represent the full performance level of WG-09. At the WG-07 grade level, you will perform assignments of a more limited scope and with less independence. You will progressively acquire the background necessary to perform at the full performance level of WG-09. Promotion is at the discretion of the supervisor and is contingent upon satisfactory performance, availability of higher level work, and availability of funds.
Duties include, but may not be limited to:
Identifies pests, locating the source, and determining appropriate control method.
Mixes and disposes of toxic chemicals.
Dispenses agents to control a wide variety of insects, vertebrate pests, plant pests and weeds.
Follows all Federal, State, Local and Facility directives that are pertinent to an effective Pest Management Program.
Utilizes knowledge of pests including ants, flies, mosquitoes, cockroaches, mice, rats, birds, termites, ticks, fleas, mites, bed bugs, etc., including their physical characteristics, habits, reproductive patterns and hiding areas.
Maintains all program plans and records, are skilled in surveillance and trouble-shooting techniques, and can determine most pest control measures needed without benefit of professional or supervisory guidance.
Plans work to be completed, develop survey, inspection and treatment schedules.
Completes required reports and maintains records, to include the chemical used and areas treated.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: Pest Controllers often lift, and handle materials weighing over 23 kilograms (50 pounds) and carry chemical solutions and equipment weighing up to 18 kilograms (40 pounds) for extended periods. They occasionally work in cramped and inconvenient surroundings requirement manipulation of equipment in awkward positions for prolonged periods. Work frequently requires standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions for extended periods. They may move furniture and equipment and operate high impact pneumatic hammers as well as various carpentry and masonry tools. The work is accomplished both inside and outside. When working outside, pest control works are often exposed to hot sun, bad weather, cold weather for extended periods of time. Outside work may be done in marsh areas or under hot and dusty conditions for extended periods. It will be important to wear protective gear as appropriate. Inside work is often accomplished in structural areas with little ventilation and/or limited access. The workers mix substances and apply pesticides while wearing approved respirators, gloves, and other personal protective equipment designed to mollify the risk of exposure to toxic dust and sprays which might damage their health. Damage to health may occur if appropriate safety procedures are not followed. Discomfort may be experienced while wearing protective clothing, respirators, goggles, or face masks for extended periods of time. They may be exposed to poisonous insects, reptiles, and plants to wild and rabid animals.
DRIVER'S LICENSE REQUIREMENT: Must possess a current and valid state driver's license. (Please do not submit a copy of your license with your application package. If an interview is requested, you may be required to provide a copy of your current, valid, and unrestricted state driver's license.)
At the WG-5026-9 level, Pest Controllers must possess a federal/state pesticides license/certification for the following areas: public health, structural and ornamental insect, and disease control. Pesticide License/Certification is not required for this WG-5026-7 level position.
