The Ann Arbor VA Healthcare System is seeking a full-time Podiatrist in the Surgery Service with specific duties to provide care within the Surgery Service to accomplish the mission of Ann Arbor, VA Medical Center.

Duties

VA offers a comprehensive total rewards package. Duties include, but are not limited to: Apply a wide range of professional theories, assessment methods and techniques to care for patients with Podiatric medical and surgical problems. Work-up, diagnosis, consultations (as indicated), prescribing medications and devices to treat foot problems, and care of conditions, illnesses, and injuries of the foot and ankle. Overall assessment of vascular, neurological, orthopedic, and dermatological status of feet. Diabetic foot care and education. Treatment of diabetic foot ulcers. Reduction of corns, calluses and thickened/deformed toenails. Excision of ingrown/deformed toenails for correction of ingrown nail, or in treatment of infected ingrown nail. Administration of local and topical anesthetics. Ordering imaging studies as indicated. Biomechanical exam and treatment, including prescription of custom orthotics (arch supports), leg braces, specialized footgear (extra-depth shoes, "diabetic" shoes, custom-made shoes, deformity-specific shoes, custom-modified shoes, and wound care shoes.) Order physical therapy, kinesiotherapy, and occupational therapy consults, as appropriate. Participate in medical education of staff, residents, and students concerning recognition of foot pathology, prevention, treatment, and referral. Attends hospital committees as assigned. Complies with all the medical center's health, safety, confidentiality, and security policies. Consultation/referral to other services/sections, as appropriate. Other duties as assigned. Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Podiatrist Basic Requirements Degree as a doctor of podiatric medicine, or its equivalent, from a school of podiatric medicine approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs. Approved schools are United States schools of podiatric medicine approved by the Council on Podiatry Education of the American Podiatry Association in the year in which the degree was granted. ~AND~ Completed, or currently completing, residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. VA Podiatrists involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status. Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the accrediting bodies for graduate medical education, the Council on Podiatric Medical Education, in the list published for the year the residency was completed, or (2) Other residencies and training experiences, or their equivalents, which the local Professional Standards Board determines to have provided an applicant with appropriate professional training. ~AND~ Currently hold, or will hold, a full and unrestricted license to practice Podiatry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or in the District of Columbia. References: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-4 Podiatrist Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office. Preferred Experience: Board certification with either the American Board of Podiatric Medicine (ABPM) or the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery (ABFAS) is preferred. Physical Requirements: Physical activity includes sitting, standing (up to 2 hours), walking (up to 2 hours), heavy lifting (45 pounds or over), reaching above the shoulder, and repeated bending. Incumbent should be emotionally and mentally stable, and capable to perform the duties of the position.

Education

Education. Applicants must possess a doctor of podiatric medicine degree, or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in podiatric medicine and surgery. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed.
