This position is part of the Office of Hearings and Appeals. As a General Attorney, you will assist in: scheduling hearings; reviewing, analyzing and drafting decisions or letters resolving preliminary and ancillary matters such as requests for extensions of time, discovery, evidentiary hearings, protective orders, and motions for modification; analyzing evidence, testimony, and legal arguments; researching applicable law and legal precedents; and drafting decisions for Administrative Judges.
Duties
As a General Attorney, you will:
Recommend positions on issues and present recommendations orally and in memoranda.
Present recommendations to the supervisor, and, upon request, to other interested officials, which may be utilized by more experienced attorneys in making final recommendations and decisions.
Provide legal assistance to higher graded attorneys or the supervisor on matters pertaining to litigation.
Perform legal research and provides recommendations to the supervisor based on the legal principles involved.
Review and become familiar with legal processes, statutes, regulations and other requirements that have a bearing on DOE activities, and also with office procedures and policies affecting the assignment area.

Requirements
- If selected, you must self-identify if you are or were (within the last 5 years) a Schedule A, Schedule C, or non-career SES political appointee as OPM approval is required prior to finalizing your selection.
- Proof of current active member in good standing in the bar of a State, District of Columbia, territory of the United States, or Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.
- Employees must maintain active bar membership while employed as an attorney with Department of Energy.
- Must be a graduate of a law school accredited by the American Bar Association with a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree or a Bachelor of Law (LL.B.) degree.
- A preliminary background check must be completed before a new employee can begin work. Current Federal employees or other individuals with an existing completed background investigation may not be required to undergo another background check.
- This position does not support 100% remote work. You will be required to report physically to the official reporting worksite as specified by the supervisor, but no less than 2 days per pay period.
- Must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
- This employer participates in the e-Verify program.
- Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered for Selective Service.
- Non-preference eligible appointees are subject to a 2-year trial period. Preference eligible appointees are subject to a 1-year trial period.
- Current active membership in good standing in the bar of a State, District of Columbia, territory of the United States, or Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. Employees must maintain active bar membership while employed as an attorney with DOE.
- This position is not included in a Bargaining Agreement.
- Initially a non-sensitive clearance is required, but after reaching the GS-13 grade level, a critical sensitive, Q level security clearance (to include drug testing) will be required . Failure to maintain the required clearance may result in removal.

Meet the minimum education requirements of successful completion of a full course of study in a school of law accredited by the American Bar Association (ABA) with a professional law degree (LL.B. or J.D.); AND
Must be a current, active member in good standing of the bar of a state, territory of the United States, District of Columbia, or Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.
