This position is for an independent research investigator with specialized experience in geriatrics/gerontology. The position is located in the Salt Lake City Geriatrics Research, Education and Clinical Center (GRECC) at the Salt Lake City VA Medical Center in Salt Lake City, UT. The purpose of this position is to serve as a research investigator on research projects within the following research domains: basic, clinical, rehabilitation and health services.
Duties

NOTE: This is a part-time position (25 hours/week). Benefits and time-off accrual will be prorated and based on your part-time work schedule.
Functions as an independent research investigator and is responsible for developing original research efforts in the Salt Lake City Geriatric Research, Education, and Clinical Center (GRECC) at the Salt Lake City VA Medical Center in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Researches and utilizes an integrative experimental approach to study cardiovascular function in health and disease.
Focuses on the complex interactions of biologic systems as they relate to the aging process.
Mentor's junior faculty, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate student trainees who are seeking to develop independent lines of research in the field of vascular aging;
Holds or be eligible to hold a faculty appointment at the University of Utah Division of Geriatrics and will serve as Research Health Scientist for the VHASLC GRECC (Geriatrics);
Collaborates with decision makers within the VA and VHA to advance cardiovascular and aging research efforts and for providing guidance and technical expertise to key VA officials on matters relating to the implementation of research findings potentially relevant for VA patient care;
Scientific responsibilities of the Researcher include: identify, initiate, develop, conduct and report on innovative GRECC research studies; either independently or in collaboration with other scientists and practitioners, to specify and test hypotheses related to cardio vascular disease populations, aging, and vascular control; to provide leadership in advancing the body of knowledge in these fields within healthcare delivery; performance improvement and GRECC research and evaluation;
Provides consultation services to VA investigators whose primary professional identification is in GRECC as research design, data collection, data encoding, analytic methods, and statistical procedures;
Creates opportunities for synthesis across multiple research projects, and integrates junior faculty into projects that will, in turn, enhance their productivity and professional growth; and
Other duties that may arise.
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday from 8:00am - 4:30pm

Qualifications
BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Have you successfully completed Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree; major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED - If you do not submit a copy of your transcript, your application will not be processed.) -AND-
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE GS14: Do you possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in federal service. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Qualifying specialized experience for this position is experience providing leadership and expertise in a research environment regarding research administrations including knowledge of research regulations and research compliance; strategic planning; oversight of budget issues and fiscal operations; and oversight and supervision of institutional research committees, e.g., Institutional Review Board (IRB); developing and writing applications for funding, conducting research using sophisticated scientific methods, and writing reports of results for publication and dissemination, expertise in one or more scientific areas such as laboratory research, clinical research, or health services research; must have peer-reviewed publications and knowledge of the process of the accreditation of research program components; conducting collaborative research projects across multiple sites; and communicating in writing to make presentations and responding to inquiries.

Physical Requirements: Duties require average physical mobility and strength, with good physical senses (sight, hearing, smell, touch) and manual dexterity; able to stand or sit for prolonged period during human testing or other experimental procedures. Able to set up testing apparatus, measuring devices or experimental conditions as required by the study protocols. Able to travel locally if required by the protocol and or nationally for attendance at scientific meetings.
