This position is open to current students in an approved Nursing school - for a period not to exceed the duration of the program. This position will afford the student to gain nursing experience on an intermittent basis. The Student Nurse Technician may work in 2, 4, 6, or 8 hour increments after school, while school is on break, weekends and holidays; however, school is priority and a Student who does not pass a nursing class will not be able to continue in the Student Nurse Technician program.

Duties

This position is being filled under the Pathways Internship Program. The program is designed to provide students enrolled in a wide variety of educational institutions, from high school to graduate level, with paid work opportunities in agencies to explore Federal careers while still in school. The Internship provides managers a ready source of student employees and potential permanent employees upon completion of the program requirements. It also provides the student with work experience directly related to the curriculum studies or career goals while offering eligibility for non-competitive conversion to permanent employment upon completion. The SNT delivers fundamental, knowledge cased care to assigned patients while developing technical competencies (VA Handbook 5005, Part 11, Appendix G6). The SNT works under the direct supervision of a designated preceptor with a goal of developing skills and judgement to utilize the nursing process in real situations. The SNT's role is to develop experience and expertise in Veteran-centric nursing care in a supportive, supervised clinical setting. This SNT delivers fundamental, knowledge-based care to assigned Veterans while developing the technical competencies required for the specific practice setting under the direct supervision of an RN preceptor. The practice of each SNT is based on skill, experience, and research and has a direct and indirect impact on client outcomes for the assigned area and the facility as a whole. Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level. Work Schedule: Part-time/Intermittent/As Needed. Will be discussed as applicable. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 10/20/2023. Internship Program: To be eligible, applicants must be must currently be enrolled in an accredited School of Nursing, accredited by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (CCNE) recognized by the Veterans Health Administration (VHA). You may qualify based on education as described below: This opportunity follows a standard promotional path: Internship selection may be made at the GS-03, GS-04, or GS-05 grade levels based on the applicant's qualifications. These grade levels are what typical college students in their sophomore or junior year may qualify. The full performance level of this position is GS-05. Progression from the entry-level to the full performance level for this occupation will depend on successful completion of all requirements for promotion. Promotions are not guaranteed to occur on a specific time schedule. For qualification purposes, an academic year is computed as follows: To qualify as a GS-03: Students must have completed one full academic year of post-high school study. To qualify as a GS-04: Students must have completed two full academic years of post-high school study or have an associate degree. To qualify as a GS-05: Students must have completed four academic years of post-high school leading to a bachelor's degree or equivalent degree. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements: Position requires physical and mental capability to practice nursing in designated clinical setting providing direct patient care. Requires: Heavy lifting 45 lbs and over., carrying, I hour, pushing (4 hours), reaching over shoulder, both hands required, walking ( 4 hours), standing ( 4 hours), kneeling repeated bending, both legs required, ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously, ability to distinguish shades of colors. Use of patient care equipment designated for Safe Patient Handling required. Must be able to sit and stand at intervals utilizing the computer to review and document in the electronic medical record. Direct patient contact may include exposure to infected patients and contaminated materials requiring ability to don protective clothing in isolation or other procedures. May be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia or psychiatric disorders. Must be mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working with others, must be effective in stressful situations, and be able to shift priorities based on patient and learner needs.
