This position is located with the Medical/Surgical Unit (3W) at the Gallup Indian Medical Center in Gallup, NM. The position serves as support staff, responsible for the prioritizing of tasks as assigned under the supervision of licensed professional nursing staff utilizing universal precautions and insuring a safe, clean and orderly environment conducive to the delivery of quality nursing care.
Duties
Provides basic nursing care to patients with a variety of conditions, illnesses, and/or injuries (i.e. routine pre and post op care; routine ante and postpartum care; apply and remove simple binders, dressings, slings, braces, etc.; apply heat and cold packs, assist patient in ambulation, transferring, positioning; etc.). Responsible for obtaining and recording patient information as assigned per unit policy (i.e. vital signs, height, weight, I&O, etc.)
Responsible of maintenance of clinical records and nursing care plans. Adheres to confidentiality policies and the Privacy Act. Assists in the arrangement of clinic appointments and discharge / transfer transportation per nursing policy.
Responsible for reporting observations by observing the patient's condition and reactions, and by keeping the nurse in charge informed of condition changes.
Assists patient in Activities of Daily Living (ADL) in accordance to the units' checklist. Provides comfort measures as necessary. Assists health providers in examination of patients by explaining procedures, positioning, draping and assembling instruments and supplies.
Assists with collection and proper care of specimens. Instructs patients in proper collection of urine samples. Prepares samples for analysis e.g. labels specimen tubes. Performs in and out catheterization after training and documented competency.
Qualifications

You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
Individual Occupational Requirements:
Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-4 and above): Qualifying specialized experience includes nonprofessional nursing care work in a hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home, or other medical, nursing, or patient care facility, or in such work as that of a home health aid performing duties such as:
Providing personal nursing care such as providing pre- and post-operative care.
Support duties for diagnostic and technical treatment procedures, such as setting up and operating special medical equipment and apparatus.
Caring for mentally ill patients, including observing, recording, and reporting changes in their behavior, and providing reassurance and encouragement.
Assisting surgeons and registered nurses in operating room activities, including passing instruments, maintaining sterile conditions, and draping and positioning patients.

Education and Training: For GS-4: Successful completion of a 2-year degree program in an accredited community college, junior college, or college or university in practical nursing or in a field of study appropriate to the specialization of the position, such as education in a program for a psychology, psychiatric, or operating room technician.
In addition to the Occupational Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
GS-03: Applicants must have successfully completed 1 year above high school with course related to the occupation. -OR- Your resume must demonstrate at least 6 month of general experience. General Experience: (l) Any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position, or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation.
GS-04: Applicants must have successfully completed 2 years above high school with course related to the occupation. -OR- Your resume must demonstrate at least 6 month of general experience (as stated above) and 6 months of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Include most if not all: Performing a variety of nonprofessional nursing care and diagnostic support duties in a hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home or other medical, nursing, or patient care facility.
Combining Experience and Education: Equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience are also qualifying.
Time In Grade
Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).
