Duties

As a Fish and Wildlife Administrator your duties will include but are not limited to the following: Anchorage: This position serves as the Project Leader for the Marine Mammals Management Office located in Anchorage, AK. The office oversees implementation of the Marine Mammal Protection Act and has jurisdiction over northern sea otters, Pacific walrus, and polar bear and is comprised of staff with expertise in marine mammals, ecology, biology, management, and policy. The office also works closely with industries and other entities to prevent and mitigate adverse impacts of human activities on Pacific walrus, polar bears, and northern sea otters in Alaska, prevent adverse impacts to subsistence use of these species, and promote human safety in polar bear country. The Project Leader serves a key role in coordinating with Alaska Native Partners on co-management of marine mammals as well as coordinating with international partners on conservation and protection for Pacific walrus, polar bears, and northern sea otters. Fairbanks: This position serves as the Project Leader for the Northern Alaska Fish and Wildlife Field Office. The office has both an Ecological Services Branch and a Fisheries and Habitat Branch, with the Project Leader overseeing the combined functions of these programs. The Ecological Services Branch works to restore and protect healthy populations of fish, wildlife, and plants and the environments upon which they depend and is responsible for implementing numerous environmental laws including Endangered Species Act, Fish and Wildlife Coordination Act, National Environmental Policy Act, Clean Water Act, and Migratory Bird Treaty Act. The Fish and Aquatic Conservation program leads aquatic conservation efforts for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in Northern Alaska and works alongside others to not only maintain healthy fish populations, but also provide subsistence harvest opportunities. The branch works with landowners and partners to restore and conserve fish habitat, and detect/eradicate/control invasive species .

Qualifications

Only experience and education obtained by 10/06/2023 will be considered. In order to qualify for this position you must possess both the Basic Requirement and Minimum Qualification. Basic Requirement: Possess a Degree in Biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. OR Possess coursework equivalent to a major, or at least 30 semester hours in courses, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Possess four years of experience that demonstrated that the applicant acquired knowledge and understanding of one or more of the biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, or related disciplines equivalent to that which would have been acquired through completion of a 4-year course of study as described above. Minimum Qualification: Possess one year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility equivalent to grade GS-13 in the Federal service. Experience must include 1) Coordinating, supervising or leading a branch, field station, or team focused on the management/conservation of natural resources; 2) Identifying and solving challenging and complex issues related to natural resource management/conservation, visitor services, outreach, or other natural resource programs; 3) serving as a natural resource or conservation organization manager or coordinator representing a federal entity in negotiating with diverse individuals or groups; 4) exercising direct responsibility for developing or implementing policies, plans, standards or procedures to carry out fish and/or wildlife management/conservation; or 5) managing teams focused on the planning, directing, or executing of short and long term activities in fish and/or wildlife management/conservation that affect a diverse group of stakeholders/partners. NOTE: All the above experience must clearly be demonstrated in your resume. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. GRADUATE EDUCATION: One academic year of graduate education is considered to be the number of credits hours your graduate school has determined to represent one academic year of full-time study. Such study may have been performed on a full-time or part-time basis. If you cannot obtain your graduate school's definition of one year of graduate study, 18 semester hours (or 27 quarter hours) should be considered as satisfying the requirement for one year of full-time graduate study.
