This position is located within the Nutrition and Food Service at the White River Junction VA Medical Center in White River Junction, VT. The Health Technician (Dietetics) provides administrative and customer service support for the VA hospital food service program. The position performs routine duties that require exceptional customer service, computer skills, proper phone etiquette, proficiency in special food service and therapeutic diet procedures.
Duties

This position involves a multi-grade career ladder. The major duties listed below represent the full performance level of GS-5. At the GS-4 grade level, you will perform assignments of a more limited scope and with less independence. You will progressively acquire the background necessary to perform at the full performance level of GS-5. Promotion is at the discretion of the supervisor and is contingent upon satisfactory performance, availability of higher level work, and availability of funds.
Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
Practices excellent customer service skills in all forms of communication, either via telephone, e-mail or in-person.
Maintains the vital connection between Nutrition Communication Center (NCC) Associates, Registered Dietitian, higher graded dietetic technicians, food service staff, Nursing, patients and guests.
Follows local-facility policies and standard procedures for patient feeding, including but not limited to missed patient meals, late tray requests, patient meal ordering, and adherence to prescribed therapeutic diet.
Triages calls from inpatient units or outpatient clinics and procedure areas relating to patient meal trays or nourishments.
Retrieves computerized information/printouts to assist with tray and/or nourishment assembly such as standing orders, nourishment labels, tabulated recipe lists, and other simple information to assist in meal delivery.
Assists patients in selection of the proper foods according to their individual diet.
Interprets diet activity and patient information to ensure meals trays contain food items adhering to patient requests and preferences, and current therapeutic diet order.
Transfers patient menu preferences accordingly and keeps NCC stocked with all supplies needed and files menus.
Ensures supplemental feedings are correctly entered.
Prints lists, reports, labels, and tray tickets following the established local facility procedures.
Cleans and maintains NFS equipment such as refrigerators and juice machines located on patient units. Stores and rotates stock items.
Delivers meals to patients, using two patient identifiers to properly identify the patient.
Retrieves meal trays from patient's bedside after meals and returning trays to dish room for cleaning.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: 5 days per week including every other weekend, 6:00am - 2:30pm or 10:00am - 6:30pm

Qualifications
In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position.

To qualify for this position at the GS-4 grade level, you must meet one of the following:
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Have at least six months (6) of general experience that demonstrate the applicants ability to perform the work of the position or experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation; and six (6) months of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-04 that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience includes: providing customer service by telephone, email or in-person; assisting patients with proper food selection according to their diet; entering menu selections; and delivering and retrieving meal trays. Note: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month and year start/end dates AND hours worked per week. -OR-
EDUCATION: Have successfully completed 2 years of study that included at least 12 semester hours in subjects related to the position. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business or technical school, junior college, college, or university for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. One year of full-time undergraduate study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business or technical school. Transcripts required. -OR-
COMBINATION: Have equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education directly related to the work of the position, and experience as stated above. Transcripts required.
To qualify for this position at the GS-4 grade level, you must meet one of the following:
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Have one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-04 grade level that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience includes: providing customer service by telephone, email or in-person; triages calls from in/out patients; assisting patients with proper food selection according to their diet; entering menu selections; transferring information using program software; cleaning and maintaining food service equipment; and delivering and retrieving meal trays. Note: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month and year start/end dates AND hours worked per week. -OR-
EDUCATION: Have successfully completed a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business or technical school, junior college, college, or university for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. One year of full-time undergraduate study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business or technical school. Transcripts required. -OR-
COMBINATION: Have equivalent combinations of successfully completed undergraduate education directly related to the work of the position, and specialized experience as described above. Transcripts required.

Physical Requirements: The work requires walking, standing, bending, lifting and carrying of light items, such as food trays, instruction materials, books, and manuals. NCC Associate functions require long periods of sitting and moving about in an office environment, including repetitive motion activities of the hands and fingers for extensive keyboard and computer mouse use, and office tasks such as answering and holding a telephone phone, and writing. The work may require walking indoors, outdoors or to and from other areas of the medical center. It may be necessary to lift and/or push equipment. Incumbent is subject to periods
continuous standing, sitting, walking and frequent stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling, and bending. Frequently lifts or moves objects weighing up to 20 pounds and pushing loaded carts of trays and/or nourishments.
