This position is located in the Outpatient/Inpatient Pharmacy Section at the West Palm Beach Healthcare System, and is one of the leading health care systems serving Veterans in the VA Sunshine Health Care Network. The Pharmacy Technician is directly involved in operating the Prosthetics and Supplies, Optifill, and Vault Technician back-up while performing a variety of pharmaceutical support tasks. The West Palm Beach Healthcare System serves approximately 57,000 Veterans each year.
Duties
The Pharmacy Technician primary responsibility is to assist pharmacists in preparing and distributing medications in the outpatient and inpatient areas of the Pharmacy. Additional duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Packages and labels unit of use medications.
Reconstitutes oral and external medications (non-sterile).
Removes and replaces outdated medications, rotates medications on shelves as assigned.
Conducts monthly clinic inspections as assigned.
Monitors pharmacy refrigerator/freezer temperatures.
Operates pharmacy equipment and restocks the Omnicell and Scriptpro cabinets.
Collects drug use evaluation data for quality improvement purposes as required.
Assists in total quality improvement activities by participating in process improvement an engaged work teams.
Work Schedule: Full time: various rotating shifts available: Monday-Friday 7:00am- 3:30pm or 8:00 am-4:30 pm or 9:00am-5:30 pm

Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Education or Experience: A high school diploma or equivalent; or at least 3 months experience
Certification: Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is required at grades GS-6 and above.
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). All persons employed in VHA in this occupation on the effective date of this qualification standard are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the title, series and grade held, including positive education and licensure/certification/registration that are part of the basic requirements of the occupation.
Grade Determinations:
GS-6 Pharmacy Technician
Experience. One year of experience equivalent to the next lower level (GS-5) and must fully meet the KSAs at the next lower level. Examples of this experience includes but not limited to: ability to solve problems and make recommendations, troubleshoot operational problems and refer for appropriate action, knowledge of the operation and care of automated equipment, ability to follow written instructions for compounding with aseptic technique for hazardous materials, compounding with aseptic technique for routine sterile products, and knowledge of computerized prescription process demonstrated by the ability to input prescriptions and medication orders.
In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs:

Knowledge of the operation and care of automated equipment.
Knowledge of, and ability to follow, written instructions for compounding with aseptic technique for hazardous materials such as oncology agents.
Knowledge, and ability to perform, compounding with aseptic technique for routine sterile products.
Knowledge of policies and procedures for inventory management in specialized areas such as emergency carts.
Knowledge of the computerized prescription process demonstrated by the ability to input prescriptions and medication orders.
