About the Position: Serves as a Telecommunications Mechanic installing, modifying, repairing, changing, wiring, and maintaining all types of telecommunications equipment. This is a Bargaining Unit position AR3135

Duties

Install, maintains, and repairs telephone instruments and equipment such as ringers, cords, plugs, jacks, transmitters, condenser, induction coils, and fuses. Determine method, technique, and materials needed to complete assignments. Install cabling in buildings and tests lines for continuity, clarity, and volume. Plan and accomplishes work using experience, wiring diagrams, and flow charts. Determine cause of improper functioning and repair or replace faulty cable sections.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position meets the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. Detection of the presence of drugs is warranted. This position is subject to a pre-employment screening and random testing.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Telecommunications Mechanic without more than normal supervision. At the WG-08 level, must possess the ability perform common duties such as experience working from job layouts, work sequences, and material requirements established by higher level workers; experience installing, removing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing electronic and electromechanical telephone key systems; experience inspecting, repairing, modifying, and maintaining a variety of telecommunication equipment such as single, dual-line, multiple-button electromechanical, and digital telephones. At the WG-10 level, must possess the ability to perform common duties such as experience skill in the use of computer diagnostic equipment to analyze and restore faulty voice and nonvoice circuits; experience using computer diagnostic equipment to analyze and restore faulty voice and nonvoice circuits; experience independently determining the work sequences, tools, and material required. At the WG-11 level, must possess the ability to perform common duties such as experience maintaining emergency power equipment such as rectifiers, battery banks, inverters, and grounding systems; experience operating computerized diagnostic and analytical test equipment to set up, install, operate, and maintain digital voice and nonvoice circuitry. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal SupervisionAbility To Use and Maintain Hand Tools (Electrical Work)Ability To Use Electrical DrawingsKnowledge of Electrical EquipmentTheory and Instruments (Electrical Electronic) Used in Shop and Trade Practices PHYSICAL EFFORT Incumbent must be physically qualified to perform work requiring standing and walking on concrete floors for extended periods, climbing ladders, pulling cables and wires, using hand tools and working in awkward positions. The work requires the incumbent to lift and carry items weighing 50 pounds and up to 100 pounds with assistance from lifting devices or other workers. WORKING CONDITIONS The work is performed both indoors and outdoors in all kinds of weather conditions; however, a good portion of the work is performed inside in well-lit, well-ventilated areas. Incumbent may be exposed to dust, dirt, and falls from ladders. Employee is exposed to the possibility of cuts, bruises, scrapes, broken bones, and serious burns caused by electrical-shock and "confined space-entry" locations (manholes). Physical requirements include climbing poles, bending, working in cramped positions, walking, and standing. While clearing trouble, may be required to work outside during storms and inclement weather. Safety belts, safety boots, safety hat, safety glasses, and gloves are provided.
